Class Descriptions

All classes are taught in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. He was given the charge by his teacher, the great yogi Krishnamacharya, to practice and disseminate this ancient system of postural yoga. These classes are based on his one-on-one instructions. Progress is gradual and the student is given personal attention. The poses are taught to the student based on the individual's ability. These classes are self-paced and knowledge of the series is not required. The student will be guided through the routine and encouraged to learn it as it unfolds. Students of all experience levels practice together.

When do I come to class?

Beginners must arrive at 5:30pm or 6:30pm on Tues / Thurs and 9:00am or 10:00am on Saturdays. As a beginner, your practice will generally last 30-60 minutes.

Experienced students may arrive anytime during the allotted class time, as long as you are finished by the end of the class.

Guidelines for Practice (Yoga Etiquette)

  • Practice only on an empty stomach. After a large meal wait at least 3 to 4 hours and wait 2 hours after a light snack.
  • Bring a towel for your teacher to make adjustments. Perspiration is a part of the detoxification process; try not to wipe it away. Enjoy it!
  • Refrain from wearing colognes and perfumes. On the other hand, please treat your fellow yogis to a clean, bathed version of yourself.
  • Be patient with yourself.

Introduction to Astanga Classes

It is recommended that you start your yoga practice with an Intro to Astanga class. It is a comprehensive exposure to the fundamentals of the practice (basic postures, breath, locks and gaze) taught experientially through the Sun Salutations.

Benefits in taking an Intro class (over simply starting a Mysore practice):

  • You will be with other first-time yoga students.
  • The teacher will go slowly, explaining each pose and movement. You will begin to learn the yoga lingo. You will be able to ask questions.
  • You will develop good habits from the beginning, gaining a firm foundation in the basics of the practice.
