There is an alphabetical list of all named persons at the end of the web page.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTES -- PLEASE READ

This information is from my "documented" database, which means it contains information from those documents that I have thus-far entered. The good side of this is that everything here has a solidly-documented source. The bad side of this is that some known information is not included (such as almost all of the many Decker children of Grietje) and also that in some cases, where there is only one source so far, there may be an error in that source.

A great deal of information found by Gerben de Jong and Sibbele Postma and reported to me by Sibbele Postma (in documents in the Frysk language) is NOT yet included here. Nor are 3 documents (23 Oct 1820 death of Gesina Leenderts, 2 Nov 1789 birth of Jannes van Wijk, 19 Sep 1825 marital consent to Jannes by father Gerrit) whose images Sibbele Postma sent to me, nor 1 image (26 Sep 1921 death of Jacob Wierda) that Tom Rittenburg sent to me. I have included a great deal, which took a tremendous effort, and the rest will have to wait to be gradually added, as I can do so.

One significant fact that I have just learned is that Grietje's first cousin, Fekke Fekkes Postma (son of her mother's sister), came to America in 1854 -- 14 years before Gerrit van Wijk moved his family to America -- and wrote letters back to Friesland from America. There is much more to learn about this, but I have learned that Fekke Postma's sister's daughter (born in Holland) was married at age 48 in 1913 in Washington state. So this very new topic has a lot more to learn about.

Special thanks to Tom Rittenburg, descendant of Willemke van Wijk, for the pictures of Martha Feenstra, Jannes van Wijk, and Janke Tjittes Smit. And thanks also to Sibbele Postma (whose wife Durkje Pietersma descends from Wiebe Douwes Feenstra and his wife Grietje Robijns de Jong) and to Gerben de Jong (who also descends from Wiebe and Grietje) for the information that they have supplied for my "undocumented" database -- and to let us know the above-mentioned and other corrections.

If you see any errors in my translations of the Dutch or Frysk language sources -- or errors in anything else, please let me know. This is definitely a "work in progress", and there is much more to learn.

Grootegast, Groningen, Holland, Befolkingsregister (Frysk word) of the community of Grootegast (This document is referenced in the 19 Nov 2004 report generated (in Frysk) by Sibbele Postma (De Sânpelsen 20; 8651 BT Drylts, Netherlands; telephone 0515 531977; e-mail sibbelepostma@castel.nl)) ID: HOL-GR-A-00001r. Yn it befolkingsregister fan de gemeente Grootegast oer it tiidrek dat Gerrit

Hja kamen yn Grootegast te wenjen yn hûs nûmer 114K en as leauwe stie by
elkenien "N.H.". Foarearst waarden seis nammen notearre nammentlik dy fan Gerrit
Jannes van Wijk, Martje Wybes Feenstra, Johannes Gerrits van Wijk, Willemke
Gerrits van Wijk, Grietje Gerrits van Wijk en Willem Gerrits van Wijk. Nei
befolkingsregisters mear foarkomt, net altyd like krekt. Wol wie it sa dat
Jehannes op`e nij berne wie yn Oldemarkt op 15 febrewaris 1851, lykas yn
Westdongeradiel oantekene stie.

Mei`t Janke as âldste fan`e bern earst nei Willem, de jongste fan de fiif
ynskreaun waard sil hja yndie letter nei Grootegast kommen wêze as de oaren. Dat
it earder wie as it útskriuwen út Holwert wei docht bliken út in earnstich
barren.
Martsje ien fan harren bern.

It oare jier lykwols yn juny wreidet de húshâlding wer út, in lytse Wiebe, neamd
nei Martsje har heit kaam yn Grootegast op`e wrâld. In blier barren dat
spitigernôch, lykas mei de earste beide jonkjes dy`t Willem neamd waarden,
omslein wêze sil yn fertriet doe`t Wiebe al nei seis dagen kaam te ferstjerren.
Sawat twa jier letter fernijt it befolkingsregister ús fan it ôfreizgjen fan de
âldste soan Jannes, hy wurdt op 11 maart 1867 útskreaun nei Kampen.

In goed jier letter, sa docht dan út it befolkingsregister bliken, hawwe Gerrit
en Martsje in foar de hiele húshâlding yngripend beslút nommen. It is noch
rieden nei in reden fansels, mar op 15 maaie 1868 wurde Gerrit en Martsje mei de
bern Willemke, Grytsje en Willem útskreaun nei "N. America"!
Soe de oanwêzigens dêr fan Martsje har neef Fekke Postma, in soan fan muoike
Hendrikjen Robijns de Jong en Fekke Fekkes Postma in rol spile hawwe? Yn
febrewaris 1854 wiene dy fan Gaasterlân ôf fuortgien en it is bekend dat Fekke
út Amearika wei brieven nei Fryslân skreau.

____ TRANSLATION ____

In the Population Register of the community of Grootegast concerning the [tiidrek] that Gerrit's
household there [oankomme kinne soe], it shows that in book 10, page 327
was inscribed on 25 May 1864 from out of Westdongeradiel the family of
coppersmith Gerrit Jannes van Wijk.

They came into Grootegast to reside in house number 114K and [as] [?leauwe = renters?] stie by
elkenien "N.H.".] [Foarearst waarden] six names [?notearre = noted?] namely those of Gerrit
Jannes van Wijk, Martje Wybes Feenstra, Johannes Gerrits van Wijk, Willemke
Gerrits van Wijk, Grietje Gerrits van Wijk and Willem Gerrits van Wijk. After
[harren] names came that of Janke Gerrits van Wijk and therewith the [ûnderstelling]
that they [har âlden] [?út Holwert wei = from Holwert?] [letter folge wie wier wurden.]
[De by] the household were written birth dates and birth places berteplakken, [?lykas = likely? probably?] in
the Population Register [mear foarkomt, net altyd like krekt.] Well was it thus that
Jehannes [op`e nij] was born in Oldemarkt on 15 February 1851, [?lykas = likely? probably?] stayed in
Westdongeradiel [oantekene].

[?With = Mei`t?] Janke as eldest of the children [?earste nei = first after?] Willem, the youngest of the five
was inscribed [sil hja yndie] [?letter nei Grootegast kommen wêze = would later come to Grootegast?] [?as de oaren = as the others had done?]. That
[it earder wie as it útskriuwen út Holwert wei] shows [út in earnstich
barren.] Gerrit and Martsje [hiene al] two young [misse moatten], but on 29
November 1864 came also the then 15 year old eldest dochter Janke to die in
Grootegast. In Kollum, in Holwert and now also in Grootegast [?ferlearen = lost?] Gerrit and
Martsje one of their children.

The other year [=? the next year?] [?lykwols = likewise?] in June [wreidet] the household [wer út], [in lytse] Wiebe, [?neamd
nei = named after?] Martsje's fathercame in Grootegast [?op`e wrâld = into the world?]. [In blier barren] that
[spitigernôch], [?lykas = likely? probably?] with the first of both youngsters of whom were named Willem,
[omslein wêze sil yn fertriet doe`t] Wiebe [al nei] six days came to die.
[Sawat] two years later [fernijt] the Population Register [ús fan it ôfreizgjen] of the
eldest son Jannes, he was on 11 March 1867 written out to Kampen.

A good year later, as it shows then out of the Population Register, Gerrit
and Martsje have made a radical decision for the whole household. It is still
guessing at the reason, of course, but on 15 May 1868 Gerrit and Martsje with the
children Willemke, Grytsje and Willem were written out to "N. America"!
Should the presence there of Martsje's cousin Fekke Postma, a son of aunt
Hendrikjen Robijns de Jong and Fekke Fekkes Postma have played a role? In
February 1854 they did depart from Gaasterlân, and it is known that Fekke
wrote letters from America to Friesland.
