DOGS BRED AT BLUESKIES

Blueskies has been breeding whippets since 1978. The first litter was co bred with Carmen De Rice and her kennel name of de Regio was used.  There was one American Champion from that litter named Ch. De Regio Earl of Snowden.  He was a grandson of my Sporting Fields Real McCoy out of a bitch named Counterpoint the Light which was virtually a repeat breeding of Real McCoy but the mothers were litter sisters. I never continued with that line.  

I have bred 18 whippet litters in 25 years. There have been 22 Confirmation Champions and many with field titles. I have bred and discarded three distinct lines due to confirmation and/or temperment issues.  There were 5 litters from those 3 lines and all offspring resulting from those breedings were spayed/neutered and all were placed in companion homes.  The line which I have based my breeding program on is primarily a line breeding on Whippoorwill Moonstone, ROM. He was injured early in his life with a broken leg and was unable to finish his confirmation championship but he has sired many nice whippets and several top producers. In order to produce consistantly good temperment, health, intelligence and confirmation one must periodically outcross to other lines which bring in new blood.  I have recently imported two whippets from Canada (Woodsmoke Kennels), of Swedish and Australian lines, and I am looking to import another from Sweden this year. I don't breed often, perhaps one litter every other year here at Blueskies although bitches that I co own are also being bred at their premises.(*Co-Bred)  These form the foundation for Blueskies Whippets.  I have extensive pedigrees on all of my breeding stock as well as photos for most generations behind them. Everything I own has been health tested for eyes (CERF), hearing (BAER), thyroid and heart. I am priviledged to have actually seen a lot of the dogs behind mine in the flesh over the years and most breeders of the lines I use have been very open with me about the virtues and potential concerns within a litter or certain dog thereby allowing me flexibility and choice in my breeding program.  As a rule I do not sell breeding stock.  My breeding program is my own.  Rarely I will sell show potential puppies or adults on breeding contracts.  Most of my dogs are placed into companion homes where they will be loved for themselves and not for other peoples expectations.  The purpose of my breeding program is to improve my breeding stock; to produce a whippet that is the soundest in temperment, health, intelligence, and capable of doing what it was originally bred for, not to sell puppies to others, however due to my whippet litters being in the 8-12 puppy range there are occasionally companion/pet/performance puppies available to others on spay/neuter contracts.
