Tall Ships

In June 2000, the Grand Turk and the Kaskelot visited Whitehaven Harbour.

Their dimensions were:

Ship Beam Draught Overall Length
Grand Turk 10.36m 3.94m 46.3m
Kaskelot 8.4m 3.6m 45.9m

Change these measurements from metres to centimetres.(Click here for the spreadsheet file)

100 centimetres = 1 metre

Both ships made the journey from Bristol to Whitehaven, covering a distance of 700 kilometres. The Grand Turk took 20 hours and the Kaskelot took 25 hours to complete the journey. What was the average speed of each ship?

Speed = Distance Travelled / Time Taken

In the 18th and 19th centuries, ships like these regularly sailed between Whitehaven, America and the Caribbean with payloads of SLAVES, FARE-PAYING PASSENGERS, TEA, COAL and RUM.

Our ship can carry a maximum of 50 fare-paying passengers or 10 tonnes of cargo, so 5 people are equivalent to 1 tonne of cargo.

In the time of John Paul Jones, if passage to America was a florin (two old shillings or 10p) and a tonne of cargo was charged at a crown (five old shillings or 25p), investigate different amounts of passengers and tonnes of cargo to be shipped out.

What combination would bring in the most revenue? (HINT: Use a spreadsheet to help you - you may like to plot a graph)

Passengers x 10p + Cargo x 25p = Total Income
