Brief History & Background

Technology Research laboratories, Inc.

TRL was formed as an independent R&D laboratory in 1971 in Cambridge, MA. We later moved our facilities to the Research Triangle Park area in North Carolina and continued with development of the iron/redox and zinc/bromine battery systems. These and other systems have been licensed to various industrial organizations for further practical development.

For over 30 years TRL has been the originator and pioneer of numerous electrochemical energy systems, and has carried them to various prototype stages. Listed below are some of the well known technologies and past TRL patents that we have initiated and developed into hardware.

Zinc/Bromine (Jersey Enterprises- ESSO, Delco GM, Duke Power Co., DOE)

Iron/Redox (C&D Battery Co, Shell Devel. Co, EPRI)

Polysulfide Redox Systems (GEL and TRL in-house development)

Bromine/polysulfide Transferred technology to National Power, PLC, Regenesys, and Innogy Load leveling battery projects.

TRL, Inc. has been developing and designing large-scale full flow battery systems for a number of years. Below is a view of portions of our earlier redox storage system with a steady output of 20 kW and total capacity of 150 kWh.

Our purpose at this time is to properly place this new CIR technology so that it may be taken to commercialization as products.
