I have worked as an illustrator and wood carver for 45 years.

I was inspired to produce my first wood carving in 1962 after visiting an Art Exhibition in Southampton.

Illustration is my job but carving has always been my relaxation and has turned into something more than a hobby. Unfortunately spending so many years at the drawing board has somewhat dulled the pleasure of producing artwork. However in 1997 taking early retirement from teaching Illustration and Computer Graphics has enabled me to spend more time at wood carving, something that I always hoped to do. Since retiring I have completed carvings of my own design as well as doing carving commissions.

Here are a very few examples of my work for you look at, I hope you enjoy them.

Where possible I endeavour to use indigenous woods. Wood like all natural products has to grow and hard woods take a long time to mature. Carvers, like all of us have a responsibility when using the products of nature, we must use them wisely and carefully. I like to think of the carver as a person paying tribute to this material by prolonging its usefulness in a way that adds beauty and a new life to the mature wood.

Most people feel an attraction to wood it is a tactile material and is almost impossible not to handle a beautifully finished piece of work.

Working on a Sculptree project in 1995 at Westonbirt. A Red Squirrel in English Oak.

I can be contacted be e-mail for any comments or questions, commissions are also undertaken.
