The Organ

The Organ was originally built by Messrs. Ernest Wadsworth Ltd. of Manchester in 1922 and was re-built by Mssrs. Wood of Huddersfield, in 1979. A new detached drawstop console in Oak has been provided and the action is electro-pneumatic with solid state note switching. The piston action is a "capture system" similar to that installed in the rebuilt organ of Liverpool Cathedral, enabling the piston settings to be altered easily, as required.

There have been several tonal changes: Mssrs. Wood providing more upperwork and a better balance between the manuals and pedal, and still later additions and extensions providing a new Pedal Trombone (1996), and 8ft Oboe, 4ft Clarion and 16ft Bourdon on the Great organ in 1999. These latter additions, together with the necessary electrical alterations, were carried out by Mr. Peter Jones.

The music which you should hear in the background is not a recording of St. Matthew's organ.

It is a MIDI file. The quality of sound therefore depends on the sound card on your computer.
