Side Saddle Riders come in all shapes and sizes, and from all walks of life. They ride diverse breeds, everything from ponies to draft horses - and all sizes in between. Just as in the astride horse world, sidesaddles come in specialized shapes and styles. Riding aside isn't difficult. In fact, the greatest challenge sometimes lies in the perception that riding aside is difficult or even dangerous. Remember that side saddles were used at a time when women were considered fragile flowers, unable to compete with men, and lacking the muscle power to stay on a horse astride. The sidesaddle is, if anything, more secure than an astride saddle, but it must be fitted properly.
SEA was first formed in the 1980s by a group of NC women who wanted to share the fun with others. The group went dormant for a decade, then was revived as the need for regional sidesaddle resources arose. We offer two levels of membership: The social level, which requires only that members sign up with the group, and the full membership which includes membership in the American Sidesaddle Association, access to files, a quarterly electonic publication, and the advice of sidesaddle experts from all over.
