Our flexable response to stump removal varies according to the site, the access, the size and number of stumps to be removed.

Our small stump grinder requires 35in wide access. On occasions when we can't get access to your tree stumps because of narrow entrances it's quite often possible to gain access via a neighbouring property. The large grinder is 90hp diesel and is the size of an estate car. The stumps are ground up into wood shavings that are left on site to fill up the hole and rot down. They should be left for six months before replanting in the same spot. An excavator might be used to dig out stumps on building or landscaping sites where the mess is of not a problem and the excavator can also be used for the landscaping.

Our most unusual stump was in East Molesey. A windblown false acacia tree with two gas pipes, two electric mains and two water pipes running directly under the tree with the roots wrapped around all the services. Our experts, working with a crew from the electric company, chiseled the roots from around the cables in the old fashioned way and gently extracted the stump with no damage being done.

Gently does it....there are two live electric mains, two water mains, and two old gas pipes tangled up in this stump.  Success, the stump is removed and the customer is happy.

The picture immediately above ties in with this recommendation we got for the job on checkatrade.com:
I recently had need for a tree surgeon to remove 50ft tree uprooted in my front garden. The stump which was badly entwined with the electric and gas cables proved to be a real problem. After a long search and several quotations (mainly on the absurdly high side) we settled for Roots & Shoots mentioned in the 10th Cobham Edition of the Trade Register. I would like to tell you what a marvellous decision that this turned out to be. I cannot say enough in praise of Shaun Petty who attended to the job. Even though the live electric cables (overseen by the electric company personnel) provided for more work than originally anticipated, the work was completed cheerfully and to everyone's satisfaction. The bill for the job was very reasonable. I would be glad to recommend this company to anyone in need of a tree surgeon.

The tree stump is ground down to wood chips which can be used as mulch around the garden. It is not possible to remove all of the roots from the tree as they can cover such a large area. When we remove a tree stump the root system will start to die away if it hasn't done so already. With some tree species, root sprouts may grow, if these are allowed to develop they will produce the nutrients that allow the root system to grow back so should be cut off until they no longer appear.

In most cases we remove the complete stump but sometimes this can be impossible depending on the location of the stump, for instance if the stump is very close to a concrete base or a tight corner of some sort we can only take so much out as access will permit. The grindings are usually used to fill the hole that is created, Alternatively this mulch can be used around the garden. If you would like us to take this mulch away please let us know when you arrange a quote.
