A good year for several reasons.
1 European Foul Brood - Morden Hall Apiary was clear of
the
disease in 2005 and following two inspections during 2006 by Alan
Byham the regional bee inspector, continues to be clear.
2 Courses - Two bee keeping courses were held during the
course of
the year. A basic course attended by people new to bee keeping
and
some existing members. The course started at the end of January
2006
and continued, in the classroom until the end of March and then
continued at Morden Hall Park Apiary on Sunday mornings where
the
students carried on learning practical bee keeping. It was heartening
to
see the Sunday morning sessions well attended with existing and
new
members keen to learn. An introductory course was held over one
weekend in June 2006 with good attendance and from this course
several
new members joined. It is proposed to hold the same courses next
year.
3. Basic Exam -- four Wimbledon Members took the BBKA basic
exam, all passing.
4 Monthly meetings - The monthly Monday evening meetings
continued throughout the year with interesting talks and demonstrations
ranging from: The Preparation of Exhibits for Honey Shows to Basic
Genetics. Attendance to the meetings has increased and the meetings
will continue next year.
5. Outside Activities The Association have been active
in
presenting bees and beekeeping to the general public. Several
members
giving talks to local clubs and organisations and WBKA presenting
a
stand at the local spring bank holiday craft fayre (three days),
apple day
(one day) also the provision and maintenance of an observation
hive in
the environmental centre on Wimbledon Common.
6. National Honey Show - The retention of the Douglas Cup
at the
National Honey Show
7. Membership - Full 33 + 7. Association 6+1. Junior 1
+ 1 -
Total new members 9.
W.B.K.A. has enjoyed a good year due to the hard work and
dedication of its members. We have built good foundations on which
we
can build and look forward to a good 2007
