New. Google is incredible and gives its users free web space for pictures.
Here are many of Harry Long's plat maps of Rockingham County, Virginia (more to come), an index into those maps (rude and crude for now), and a blog or two. Most of my genealogy research notes are now in a Google document. Virginia and North Carolina are missing. Later I'll add "how to" pages for genealogy beginners; "hints & tips" for experts; and jpegs of original documents. If you know of any such pages already on the internet, please send me the URLs.

Beverly Nelson Rambo published the Rambo Family Tree in 1986 and died of cancer in 1990. She trusted her sister, as her executor, to conserve her Rambo information, but the trust was betrayed and Beverly's Rambo materials were destroyed.

At Beverly's request I am continuing her work with the help of Peter Craig and hundreds of Rambo descendants.

A read-only CD of the Rambo genealogy is available for $30. Adobe Acrobat allows comprehensive searches. While I don't want to charge too much for a read-only CD, I also don't want the publication badly delayed by mailing hundreds of CDs. A couple of cousins who know how much work I've done have suggested that I charge $30 for it, so that is the asking price. After the book goes to publication, the CD will be revised and improved, so you might want to wait to order it. Send your check to this address in Shawnee Mission.

Cite Your Sources when you share information. If you have no sources, you might as well make up a fiction. I was guilty of neglecting source citations for some time. Believe me, it causes problems. If you don't confirm your information with primary sources, you can spend a lot of time and money tracking the wrong people, someone else's ancestors.
What is your response when a correspondant writes, "My information differs from yours. I show a different wife and different children. Where did you get your information?" (It happened to me.)
The sooner you learn to keep track of your sources, the less trouble you will have later.

Their quarterly newsletter is a real treat and often discusses Rambo ancestors. If you decide to discard your copy, consider donating it to the genealogical collection of your choice.
The Swedish Colonial Society web site contains several previous issues of the newsletter and a biography of forefather Peter Gunnarson Rambo written by Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig, the most eminent New Sweden historian.

Similarly Peter Craig's book, The 1693 Census of Swedes on the Delaware, is very interesting for Rambo descendants and provides an excellent example of thorough documentation. The ASCII Rambo book files on the web include verbatim transcriptions of all wills prior to 1825 of all Rambo descendants in Philadelphia Co., PA.; Gloucester Co., NJ; and Salem Co., NJ. Images of many of those wills will be available on CD sometime after the book is printed.

Any photocopies of genealogical proofs of Rambo relationships that you can send will be very much appreciated.
NEEDED are COPIES of wills, deeds, bible records, marriage records, etc which prove family relationships.
NEEDED are copies and transcriptions of biographies in county histories and of obituaries and anniversaries from local newspapers. Thanks in advance.

I've done enough typing to last several lifetimes. If your genealogical information has been typed into a computer, please send the computer files or GEDCOMs on CD. Consider it an OFFSITE BACKUP & stuff all your genealogy files onto it. You need to learn to backup ALL your data to avoid catastrophic loss. Part of any proper backup is an off-site storage (in case of flood or fire). By sending me copies of all your genealogy, you are establishing a good habit. I am a private individual, financially secure, with no desire to exploit or profit from your data. If your letter gets returned, take it back to your local post office and tell them that the Shawnee Mission Post Office hires incompetent help every so often and has a peculiar numbering scheme for P.O. Boxes. Assure them that the address is good and insist that they resend it to Shawnee Mission without charging you for the obvious incompetence of the Shawnee Mission Post Office. (If this web site is still up I am alive and paying the bills and paying for that P.O. Box.)

Every conscientious author, including every genealogist, should ALWAYS CITE SOURCES. When you send me your family group sheets, please tell me how to word the credit to you for your information. (Read my SUGGESTIONS about the content and form of footnotes, endnotes, and attributions.)

Before you send me your early Rambo genealogy information, please check that you have none of the names listed on the "Rumors that Refuse to Die" page. These were the published guesses of earlier genealogists, who, unfortunately did not label them as guesses. Generations of gullible genealogists since have continued to promulgate the rumors. Sorry, but when a cousin sends me a genealogy that includes any of these names, I know that they are sending me rumors and junk. If you have decided to believe in these rumors, we can be civil and "agree to disagree." You have your beliefs, I have mine. I don't believe that there was any Gunnar de Rambeau. You can believe that if you want to, but you won't see him or Anna Paulsdotter or Matts Hanson or Magdalena Bauerin as Rambo ancestors in this book, nor will you see any mention of French ancestry. If you can find one shred of original evidence to support any of these people as Rambo ancestors, my hat is off to you and I'll change the book accordingly.

Several people expressed interest in seeing more pictures in the book. I have ignored pictures until now as my interest is in names and biographies. Since the book is being published in several volumes and since each volume will be printed, bound, and mailed individually when each order is received, there is no reason that I cannot publish a volume of Rambo pictures. I will take a "vacation" from the Rambo genealogy for a couple of years, but will start asking for pictures as soon as I resume work for the 3rd edition.

It is now considered UNETHICAL to publish names of living individuals without their express permission. Privacy is such a sticky issue. My brother was a very private person who would have been incensed if his name had been printed in ANY book without his permission.
If you want me to print everything you send about everyone: yourself, your children, your siblings, nephews and nieces, grandchildren and great nieces; then I'll be publishing everything a crook needs to steal their identity; that is their names, children, birthdates, marriage dates, places of residence, and biographical information.
You know how much different the world is now than when we grew up. Have you considered how different it may be when your grandkids are our age? Identity theft is a new threat to our generation. Imagine what the crooks and con artists will be able to do in fifty years. I am not putting information into the book about my own cousins unless they specifically say to do so ... and most of them don't feel that it is appropriate to speak for their own children as regards spouses and children.

PLEASE SEND me a list of NAMES of LIVING INDIVIDUALS who wish to see their names included in the 3rd edition of the Rambo Family Tree. If a person was born after 1915 and no date of death is known for them and their spouse, they may be living and their names will NOT appear in the book or on the web.

If you care about the disposition of your genealogical materials, PROVIDE FOR THEM IN YOUR WILL. Otherwise you can kiss it goodbye. Between 1986 and 1990, Beverly had accumulated much more information about the Rambo families and was preparing to publish a revision. She asked me to continue her work, but I arrived in Los Angeles the day after she died. Her sister always said that she would send Beverly's Rambo materials to me, but in fact has been a "stone wall," promising anything over the phone but doing nothing. Once this paragraph appeared on this web site, she did send a small package of copies Beverly had made of published materials amounting to 3 inches of the 22 feet of materials Beverly possessed. I believe that the majority of Beverly's collection was destroyed when her brother moved, so am compiling this edition of The Rambo Family Tree without the aid of Beverly's work.

Always be skeptical of published materials including Beverly's and mine. Anything published contains errors and often contains speculation which is masqueraded as fact. Until you have seen proof in "original, handwritten documents" (such as wills, deeds, court records, family bibles, or the like), all you have is hearsay, one step removed from rumors and speculation.
