Come to the club shop on our clubnights, or have a chat to Chas Keeling at SCD (see Links).
For a beginner, get the standard stuff:
1/32 The Parma International 32 kit has everything you need to build a rolling chassis. You need a Parma Super 16D motor and a 9 tooth 64 pitch pinion to fit the spur gear in the kit. Choose a 1/32 Lexan body from Chas – about 100 styles to choose from, including historics. My favourite at the club at the moment is David’s Lola 222, though Jason’s Escort Cosworth is cool. For kids try a Falcon motor geared at 11/38 with no lead. Less power, very forgiving and still needs skill to drive.
1/24 Champion Turboflex chassis with 3/32” rear axle and a Parma Super 16D. Choose one of many 1/24 shells to fit. We like the Parma Merc CLK and the Betta Brun-Judd, though star of the show is David’s fleet of classics, including Lola T70, McLeagle and Chaparral!
For either scale buy from your local model shop
A length of 16 gauge piano wire, a length of 18 gauge piano wire a length of 16 gauge inside diameter and a length of 22 gauge ID brass tube
As you advance there are tweaks to try:
A lowered guide costs about a quid and helps the car turn in better.
A blueprinted motor costs a bit more and gives you more oomph.
Some metal gears on the 1/32 (Sonic, Faas or Betta 64 pitch) will sound whizzy and go great.
Er, that’s about it!
