The Metropolitan Tabernacle in London England, which could accommodate 7,000 people, was the largest mega-church of the Victorian age. Its pastor was Charles Haddon Spurgeon, affectionately known as "The Prince of Preachers."
He preached his first sermon at 16 years of age, in a small cottage living room, to a few people; and he later addressed over 23,500 in one service. It is estimated that he preached to more than 10 million people, in 38 years of ministry, before the invention of radios or microphones.
He built a Bible School that graduated over 900 students while he was living, and it is still going strong today. He had 66 separate organizations in the church, working under his direction; and many other ministries outside the premises.
He wrote over 140 separate books, three of which sold over a million copies while he has still living. One of these publications was a 25 year compilation of 3,561 sermons, a collection bound in 63 volumes. Beside these writings, he often wrote as many as 500 letters a week, before there was a typewriter.
He was a strong defender of the faith, whose convictions had him ousted from the Convention, but the stigma did not diminish his popularity. He accomplished this in spite of a physical handicap that caused him severe pain and deep depression. Like David, "he served his own generation by the will of God" [Acts 13:36].
Written and narrated by Dr. KEN CONNOLLY of Santa Ana, CA (USA). He is the son of the late Peter Connolly, a man we were blessed to know personally during the closing years of his ministry in Pasadena, Texas. Ken is a veritable genius in his work on videos and there is no narrator who can present a biographical or historical item in Christian history more effectively than Ken. We have seen several of his videos and have been spellbound by his intense and detailed presentations. David Smith of the Biblical Heritage Collection, [London England], is the executive producer.
Join Ken in this 56-minute video cassette as he takes you "on location" (in person) to various sites in England related to the life and ministry of Charles Spurgeon (along with numerous photographs). Through "special effects" you will even see Ken in Spurgeon's actual pulpit. The video is packaged in a plastic case with a color photo of Spurgeon [below] on the front cover and the brief biographical sketch of CHS mentioned above on the back cover. You will be thrilled in learning more about Spurgeon with Dr. Connolly! And this video makes a thoughtful gift!
SPECIAL BONUS: For USA orders thru Pilgrim, included with the video is a FREE copy of Ken's separate 8-page booklet "C. H. Spurgeon, A Biographical Sketch" (from his PILGRIM FOOTPRINTS Biography Series).

GEORGE MULLER |
of Bristol A 55-minute video about a man who discovered that God was utterly reliable! |
In reviewing the 63 years he spent in a "faith" ministry, the results were staggering... |
The schools collectively had 121,683 students. The orphanages had accommodated 10,000 orphans. |
It is believed that 2,813 orphans left the institution as believers, and in their later lives, according to |
their letters, literally thousands more were led to Christ. It was believed that of the 2,000 students |
in the orphanage, when Mr. Muller closed his diary, 609 of them were believers. The institution also |
distributed over 281,000 Bibles, nearly 1,500,000 New Testaments, and over 111,000,000 tracts. |
Several hundred missionaries received financial assistance totaling nearly 260,000 (British$) pounds. |
Sixty-three foreign missionaries were sent out from his church alone, and he built ten other churches, |
six of which were self-supporting at the time of his death (he entered glory on March 10th, 1898). |
Nearly 1,500,000 pounds was contributed to the Institution as a result of the prayers of Mr. Muller. |
His principles survived his death and, by 1939, the total funds prayed into the Institution was |
approximately 2,370,000 pounds. (see above Information to order; same as the Spurgeon video.) |

NOTES OF INTEREST by Ken Connolly |
|
Charles Haddon Spurgeon is the MODEL! |
When I was a young graduate going to my first pastorate, my dear father gave me his only set of C. H. Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, the original Passmore and Alabaster edition. Dad's advice was succinct and simple: "Make him your model!"
Though that was 30 years ago, I continue to benefit from that sound advice, and I give the same to my students!
First, Spurgeon was a preacher who COMMUNICATED. His approach was unconventional for his day, when men wrote their sermons in full and then read them from the pulpit. He scribbled his outlines on small sheets or back of an envelope, and then simply came alive in the pulpit, with the truth contained in his outlines. He not only surpassed the preaching skills of his generation, I dare to believe that he has done so for every generation since Paul!
Second, he was SCRIPTURAL. I don't mean that he was merely sound in his teaching, that is evident; I mean that his knowledge of the scriptures is evident in the selected texts of his 63 volumes. Look at the range of scripture he covered. In fact, examine each sentence, and you will find it laden with the phraseology of the Bible. His language was steeped in the terminology of scripture.
Third, he was a THEOLOGIAN. His writings could easily be the text books for any Bible college. His sermon against baptismal regeneration is peerless. His defense of the truth in the Downgrade Controversy not only evidenced a sound knowledge, but further displayed undaunted courage, and gave witness to an unbending conviction. He is a worthy model for theological students today.
Finally, he was PRACTICAL. He addressed the problems and pressures of common people. He was concerned about applied religion and brought God into the streets of Victorian London. He saw its depravation, and then acted to clean it up. His orphanage, alms houses, preacher's school, colportage association and church, with its 66 societies ministering to the needy, testified to his avid concern for applied truth.
He is, without contradiction, a noble model for every minister, |
and very worthy of the title, "The Prince of Preachers." |
Kenneth Connolly is one of two sons by the late Peter Connolly (died 1969), |
both being longtime preachers; the other son, Peter Jr., lives in England. Ken is author of the superb book and video... |
