Our Families Agricultural Roots

Ever since arriving in the Carolinas hundreds of years ago, My ancestors have been involved in agriculture in many ways. My Grandfather owned and operated a family dairy business for over 40 years. My parents are still working in the field of agriculture. That's why I like to help my Dad with our plants. I have agriculture in my blood & I like Orchids the best.

Encyclia cochleata
This is the first Orchid I learned to repot with my Dad. We did this under the advice of Mr. Alan Fortner who made up a special potting mix at a Coastal Carolina Orchid Society meeting.

This is also my first to bloom, a Multiple Phalanopsis Hybrid (fledgling x Terrilyn fujitake) X Phal. Newberry Bouquet 'Blushing Bride' #6259.   My Dad bought this for me at Carter & Holmes Orchids.

This is #4661 Lc. Ptarmigan Ridge 'Mendenhall' x Lc. Rolf Altenburg 'Gloriosa'.

Another beautiful C & H Orchid.

 My Tips

If you plan to grow your orchids indoors, you might try this. You can use any shallow  plastic container or dish. This container should be able to hold a small amount of pebbles. Only, Pour enough water to rise over the pebbles. Set the Orchid pot in the container. This will help keep the humidity up. Maybe the plant won't dry out so quickly, indoors.

After a season or two, Orchid roots start to grow out of the pot. Now, its time to re-pot your orchids in a bigger pot. I prefer to use clear plastic pots. The clear pot allows you to easily check on the conditions of the roots.

For watering & misting, I use rainwater collected from our barrel in the back yard.
