POE 2000 was a wonderful opportunity for young people in junior high and
high school, who have some keyboard training, to spend a week exploring the wonders of the
pipe organ, the "King of Instruments."
The fun-filled week included: private lessons, work- shops, tours,
recreation and a closing student recital.
A typical daily schedule included: breakfast, mini-concert, workshop,
private organ lesson, lunch, pipe an tour, dinner, individual practice and social events.
Students were introduced to basic organ technique, hymn playing and
organ repertoire. Private lessons were available for all levels of playing ability.
POEs provide private and group instruction in the basic rudiments of
pipe organ technique and service playing, expose students to various concepts and examples
of pipe organ construction and design, and give young musicians a chance to meet others
with similar interests.
Pipe Organ Encounter is an educational outreach program of the American
Guild of Organists.
STUDENT REGISTRATION Anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 with some
keyboard background was eligible to apply. Previous organ study is not necessary, but some
piano proficiency (e.g., a Bach Invention) was required
FACILITIES Concordia University's campus is in a beautiful, secluded
area between Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. Students occupied dormitory rooms on the
campus. Most meals were served in the university dining hall. Full-time POE committee
chaperones and campus security officers were on duty at all times All activities and
events will be fully
