“......the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.............” 1 Tim.1:11
Recently, I was reading through the first letter to Timothy and the above verse struck me quite forcibly. The Almighty, Eternal, Holy, Righteous and Happy Creator God had something He wanted men and women to know. He had established a way of return for a sinful and wayward people and needed to let them know all about it. He was very happy to place this message in the hands of those He had chosen to be his messengers. Jesus said “ye shall be witnesses unto me” Acts 1:8. This is what the apostles became as we see in Acts 2:14 “Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice,” Peter preached this good news of God. This good news is what God produced, in which He states the glory of all his perfection’s, revealing his purposes, showing his transaction, and manifesting the happy promises of it to those who receive this happy news. This good news was committed to the apostle Paul and to all who have been called to preach. ”But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts”. 1Thess 2:4
The tremendous responsibility placed upon the shoulders of preachers is to proclaim the glory, wisdom, grace, and love of God in the salvation of men. A minister of the gospel must be compelled to teach the doctrine of peace, pardon, righteousness and salvation by Jesus Christ
If our longing is to please God, then we must be sure to preach the good news as God gave it, which might not please men, but when souls are saved God is very happy. “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” 1 Cor. 1:21.
As messengers of God’s good news, we have to answer only to the God who gave us the message. The good news we preach does not come from men, but to men. Paul writes, “............ do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Gal. 1:10
We ought to be striving in all our preaching to please God. What a wonderful thing it must be to have a testimony like Enoch. He pleased God. Heb.11:5
The message should commence with a proclamation of the completeness of God’s character. Following on from that the messenger should declare God’s purpose and the importance of the sacrifice of the Son of God at Calvary. Finally the preacher must encourage the listener to start on the narrow way telling of the sure promises of God to those who obey.
“…which was committed to my trust…” I know that Paul was writing personally knowing that God had given him the responsibility to take the light of the gospel to the Gentiles as he said, “ Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle”, 1 Timothy 2:7 “Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles”. 2 Timothy 1:11.
“However as all scripture is given ………….and is profitable” we can apply this also to we who have been called to preach the good news. So let us take this trust of “…the glorious gospel of the blessed God……” seriously.
God is expecting those who are called to preach to please Him as we herald out this glorious good news. The responsibility is great, the result the pleasure of the just, righteous, awe-inspiring, everlasting God. What an incentive!
