To make this koala bear, all you need is PSP.  I have put in a link on my home page for you to get a 30 free trial.

This tutorial has a lot of pictures so please give it time to upload.

OK.  Lets get started!

1.  Open a blank canvas of 150 X 200, this will give you plenty of room to work with!  Flood fill this first layer with white and name it 'background'.
Then make a second raster layer, name this one 'outline'.

2.  Get your paintbrush tool, size one and draw the outline on the outline layer! using color #404040.

3.  With your magic wand, select and then with the flood fill tool, fill inside the body with #808080 and inside the ears with #909090.

Now for the shading.

4.  With your magic wand, select inside the head area.

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.
Using these settings:

Vertical = -2
Horizontal = -4
Opacity = 80
Blur = 20
Shade = #202020

Add a second Cutout with these settings:

Vertical = 0
Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 50
Blur = 10
Shade = #C0C0C0

Deselect.

5.  With your magic wand, select inside the body area.

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.
Using these settings:

Vertical = 0
Horizontal = -4
Opacity = 80
Blur = 25
Shade = #202020

Add a second Cutout with these settings:

Vertical = -2
Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 80
Blur = 18
Shade = #C0C0C0

Deselect.

6.  With your magic wand, select the far arm.

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.
Using these settings:

Vertical = -3
Horizontal = -3
Opacity = 50
Blur = 8
Shade = #202020

Add a second Cutout with these settings:

Vertical = 1
Horizontal = 1
Opacity = 50
Blur = 4
Shade = #C0C0C0

Deselect.

7.  With your magic wand, select far leg.

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.
Using these settings:

Vertical = -1
Horizontal = 12
Opacity = 50
Blur = 8
Shade = #202020

Add a second Cutout with these settings:

Vertical = 0
Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 50
Blur = 5
Shade = #C0C0C0

Deselect.

8.  Select inside both inner ears,
Effects > 3D effects > Inner bevel.
With these settings:

9.  With your lasso tool select this area of the arm:
(if you hold down the shift key you can add to it and if you hold down the Ctrl Key, you can take away bits...)

lasso settings:

Selected area:

(The selection 'above' the arm doesn't have to be exactly the same as mine, but make sure you get all of the inside of the arm!)

10.  Make a new raster layer (name this layer shading) and with the new layer active, flood fill the selected area with #808080.

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout
with these settings:

Vertical = -3
Horizontal = 0
Opacity = 40
Blur = 9
Shade = #202020

apply cutout again with these settings:

Vertical = 3
Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 40
Blur = 6
Shade = #C0C0C0

Deselect.

11. Now, you will notice that the edge sticks out like a sore thumb!!
So, with your eraser tool at these settings:

and your smudge tool with these settings:

work away at the edge so that it 'disappears'!
Try to use small strokes and take your time with it so it looks good.
Keep zooming out so that you can see the effect.

If you have strayed over the edge of the Koala, clean the area with the eraser tool after.

12.  Make the 'outline' layer the active layer again by clicking on it and with the lasso, select the leg area like this:

13.  Make the 'shade' layer the active layer again by clicking on it and flood fill the selection with #808080

Selections > Float > Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.
with these settings:

Vertical = 2
Horizontal = 6
Opacity = 50
Blur = 9
Shade = #C0C0C0

apply cutout again with these settings:

Vertical = -2
Horizontal = -2
Opacity = 60
Blur = 11
Shade = #202020

Deselect.

14.  Like you did with the edge of the arm, using your eraser tool and smudge tool with the same settings, work away at the edge until it disappears.

15. Make a new raster layer and name this layer 'features'.
with your paintbrush at size one and color #000000 (black), draw the features!

16.  With the magic wand, select both eyes (hold down the sift key)

Effects > 3D Effects > inner bevel,
and use the round preset settings.

17.  With the magic wand, select inside the nose and flood fill with color #202020.  Add the same inner bevel that you used for the eyes but change the color to #808080.

18.  If you wish you can add some 'fluffy bits' to the ears with your paintbrush tool set to size one and color #404040 like this:

19.   Close off the Background layer by clicking on the glasses and then merge the rest of the layers together (Layers > Merge > Merge visible).

Save as PSP image and your done!!
