West Virginia has several nicknames.....
Mountain State
Wild Wonderful West Virginia
and Almost Heaven.
The State's motto is
"Mountaineers Are Always Free"
West Virginia, state in the eastern United States, west and north of Virginia
and east of Kentucky.
Charleston is the capital and largest city.
West Virginia's total area is 62,758 sq km (24,231 sq mi). Mountains dominate
the state, but flatlands are located along the major river valleys. Lying
within the Appalachian Mountain System, the state contains parts of two natural
regions: the Ridge and Valley province and the Appalachian Plateau. West
Virginia's Eastern Panhandle lies in the Ridge and Valley province of the
Appalachian Mountains. Here, heavily forested parallel mountain ridges, running
from northeast to southwest, are separated by narrow valleys. Immediately
west of this province, and including about five-sixths of the area of West
Virginia, is the Appalachian Plateau.
West Virginia generally has warm, humid summers and cold, humid winters.
Higher parts of the Appalachian Allegheny Mountains have heavy annual
precipitation, which is evenly distributed throughout the year and falls
as both rain and snow.
Forests, mostly of hardwood trees, cover about three-quarters of West Virginia.
The sugar maple is the state tree, and the rhododendron is the state flower.
Besides many smaller mammals, wildlife includes numerous deer and black bear,
whose number has increased in recent years. The cardinal is the state bird.
West Virginia's most pressing conservation concerns are soil and forest
conservation and the regulation of strip mining, followed by the reclamation
of severely polluted state waterways.
Manufacturing and mining dominate West Virginia's economy. Extensive deposits
of bituminous coal the state's most important mineral covers much of West
Virginia. Other mining products include natural gas, petroleum, limestone,
gravel, and salt. Pottery clays and high-quality sand, used in glassmaking,
are also found.
Important manufacturing sectors include chemical industries, primary metal
industries, lumber and wood products industries, firms producing fabricated
metals, and glass manufacturers. Businesses and industries in the state include
automobile parts makers, aircraft manufacturers, and computer software companies.
West Virginia is plagued by pockets of severe poverty and unemployment.
Agriculture is an important supplementary livelihood for people who work
away from the farm when jobs are available. The principal commodities produced
for cash are livestock and related products. Crop sales include hay, apples,
corn, tobacco, and peaches.
West Virginia's population (1997 estimate) is 1,815,787. It is the second
least urbanized state in the nation, with only 36 percent of its inhabitants
classified as urban dwellers. After Charleston, other important cities include
Huntington, Wheeling, Parkersburg, Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg, and
Beckley.
Whites constitute the overwhelming majority of the population, followed by
blacks. The largest religious group in West Virginia is the Baptists, followed
by Methodists, Roman Catholics, and Presbyterians.
West Virginia's beautiful mountain areas afford fine recreational opportunities.
Popular sports include fishing and hunting. Mineral springs, principally
those at White Sulphur Springs and Berkeley Springs, have attracted visitors
since colonial times. What is now Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
was the site of several events in American history (see Harpers Ferry). Further,
West Virginia has three national forests, nine state forests, and numerous
state parks, some of which have facilities for outdoor recreation. George
Washington National Forest, which is shared with Virginia, includes part
of the Appalachian Trail.
Take Me Home Country Roads
Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains,
flowing like the breeze.
(Chorus)Country roads, takes me
home, to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusky, painted on the sky
Misty taste the moonshine,
teardrop in my eye.
Chorus
I hear the voice, in the morning
hour she calls to me
Radio reminds me of my
home far away, Driving down
the road I get a feeling that I
should have been home
yesterday (yesterday)
