Favourite Fuchsias

Books on fuchsias have 'blossomed' in the past twenty years, and there is now a wide range to choose from. A small selection is listed here of publications that can be of use, both to the novice and experienced grower.

Fuchsias - For House and Garden
George Bartlett(1990) The Crowood Press,
Ramsbury, Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 2HE

This paperback of 128 pages covers in a comprehensive and very readable way all the basics of growing fuchsias. There is a useful fuchsia calendar which outlines the jobs to be done, month by month throughout the year. The book is well illustrated with photographs and excellently coloured diagrams.

How to Grow Fuchsias - A practical guide
Ken Pilkington(1999) Published privately by the author at
33 Beckdean Avenue, Poulton-le-Fylde,
Lancashire FY6 8BG, UK

This paperback (modestly described by the author as "The Fuchsia Bible") contains lots of useful advice on growing fuchsias. It is distinctive in that it includes  a description of the author's technique of so-called 'mutli-plant culture', in which as many as 8 or so fuchsia plants are grown on to maturity in a single pot. The author claims many advantages for this method

Growing and Showing Fuchsia Triphylla Hybrids
Paul G Heavens(1994) Published privately by the author at
16 Fulbourn Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge CB1 4JN, UK

This is possibly the only publication devoted entirely to the fuchsia triphyllas. Its 24 pages detail the special requirements for the cultivation of these hybrids, and ends with a comprehensive list of the known cultivars.

Fuchsias - A Colour Guide -
George Bartlett(1996) The Crowood Press,
Ramsbury, Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 2HE

After an introduction and brief cultural guide, the book describes over 2000 cultivars and species that are available from specialist nurseries in the UK. Well over 700 of the fuchsias are illustrated
in attractive colourful photographs
.

Fuchsias - The New Cultivars
George Bartlett (2000) The Crowood Press

The natural successor to the above describing 1500 more cultivars, with over 500 splendid photographs.

Growing Fuchsias
Carol Gubler(1995) Aura Books, CLB Publishing,
Godalming, Surrey, England

A fuchsia book with a difference, both in content and format. Much of the book covers fuchsia culture, illustrated by excellent colour photographs, but there is an emphasis on, and a separate section devoted to, the display of fuchsias. The expert as well as the novice can gain some ideas here.
.

FUCHSIA--a hamlyn care manual
David Clark (1997) Hamlyn, Michelin House, 81 Fulham Road, London SW3 6RB

A guide to all-year-round care
An extensive directory of every major fuchsia species and cultivar, illustrated with superb colour photography.
