This is SQL on D³by Malcolm BullThis is SQL on D³ looks at the essential features of the SQL query language as it is offered on D³ systems. The material is aimed at technical users who will probably use SQL as a tool within other systems: with Visual Basic programs within Forests and Trees and similar tools within Pick/Basic programs to maintain and exploit their database from a client environment. The material is also suitable for non-technical users and others who might wish to use SQL as an enquiry language to produce reports and make enquiries about their database from the server environment. The book is suitable for those who have used AQL and/or the D³ system before, and also for those who are coming to SQL and Pick for the first time. In this book, I look at: The general features of SQL as an enquiry language The general features of interactive SQL The construction of SQL queries The application of SQL in exploiting the database The creation and maintenance of tables within the database Some administrative tasks associated with SQL Some differences between standard SQL and D³/SQL I do not discuss: The installation or operational aspects of the client/server software The detailed use of SQL within Visual Basic or other software The technical details of D³/ODBC COMMIT / ROLLBACK / SET TRANSACTION statements Embedded SQL in Pick/Basic, Visual Basic or any other environment Although D³/SQL is available alongside AQL – the Access Query Language – as a means of making enquiries about the database, and many users will already be familiar with AQL, I do not assume that the reader has any knowledge of AQL. This book is not intended to present an exhaustive description of the subject but merely to place it in context and give the reader enough information to use the facilities and to survive. The book is designed to be used for general reading, and also as an essential element of MultiValue training courses. It is suitable for use by beginners, by experienced users, and by technical users The book – like all the titles in our popular This is... series - is produced in a format which enables training organisations and software houses to include it as a part of their own education and training materials, and which allows us to keep the material up-to-date as the systems grow and extend the features and facilities which are available within the language.
