Ordering Trees

We prefer to ship trees during the dormant season and while the weather is suitable for shipping. This means we can generally ship from October through March. We will also ship from April to July 1, and September if the customer requests it and is understanding of the risk, and the weather is not too hot. Shipping when the trees are growing requires expedited shipping - usually 3rd Day Select, and it's higher cost. Most of the larger trees require boxes that exceed size limits for air shipping, so must go via surface. Please see below for shipping cost details. We do not ship in July and August.

Please order by the listed tree code numbers, as this helps us keep tree costs down. It also helps us if you can list your ordered trees in the same order as they occur in the catalog. This will help keep the cost of trees lower.

Shipping Costs

Shipping costs are paid by the purchaser. Please see the table below for an estimated shipping cost schedule for our seedling trees. Due to the large sizes of boxes required for the trees, air shipping by UPS has gotten prohibitively expensive, thus all trees are now shipped via UPS Ground service. This takes about 5 working days to most locations outside the western United States.  Please include estimated shipping costs as per the following table:

You'll need to trust us to use our best judgment as to whether weather conditions permit shipping. Please do not request shipment in July or August.

Please read the following before ordering to avoid misunderstandings on shipping costs.

We need to explain UPS shipping charges and what we do to decide on shipping for your order. UPS has a multitude of rates. In general, for small trees, and for not over 6 to 10 trees, we use a box size that allows Third Day shipping to all parts of the US (outside the Northwest) for $18 to $22. Next Day Air for virtually all shipments are now prohibitively expensive. Except for fall and late spring when the trees are leafed out, the extra charge to cut a day or two off shipping is, in our opinion, not worthwhile.

When the trees are a little larger, or there are more trees, and we must go to a larger box. When the box exceeds one cubic foot, and the shipping is by air, UPS goes by a "Dimension Weight" and the rate jumps considerably. Second Day Air is too expensive so we generally use Third Day Select (a ground service), which cuts it back to about $30.

When the trees are even larger (most "Big Trees"), or there are more and we need to go to the largest box size we use, the boxes cannot be shipped UPS by air (except to Alaska and Hawaii, which is the only choice for those two locations and would run between about $55 and $75). We ship "Big Trees" by ground service, which takes about 5 business days to the Midwest and East, and costs about $40 to $50 per tree.

You can understand how difficult it is for us to have customers accurately estimate shipping charges. Often we do not know the cost options until the order is packed and on the scale at UPS. We then decide, based upon shipping options, customer preferences, weather, and tree conditions, which of the multitude of rates to select. Accordingly, you may not always get the exact shipping method you asked for, and there is often a few dollars excess or shortage that needs to be settled.

We need to ask for the understanding of the complexity of shipping, and assure you we use our best judgment and experience of 19 years and thousands of tree shipments to choose your shipping.

We do our best to eliminate errors in tree price listings, but mistakes do occur and prices do change occasionally.

Accordingly we are not obligated to sell trees at obviously incorrect prices when they involve a typographical error,

or even if  we need to alter prices for some reason. We will always honor correct prices that were current
