Pam does not charge a fee for you to be part
of her Helpline as some others do, all she asks is for you to supply your
own envelopes and stamps. She has written a book with all the information
you need in it and asks only for the price of the book. SHE DOES NOT RECEIVE
ANY PROFIT FROM THE BOOK. The price of the book goes towards the
printing.
Pam also has a website and you can visit the

MERCURY AND OTHER
METAL TESTS
There are many tests which are available to
ascertain whether or not you are being poisoned by the mercury in your amalgam
fillings, or even by any other metal in your fillings or crowns. Not all
tests which your GP may send you for will give a "positive" result even if
you are loaded with mercury. I myself, had a blood test which came back normal.
This is because mercury does not always circulate in the blood stream, it
sticks to the tissues within the body. It is the same with a urine test,
mercury will only show up in the urine if you are given a chelating agent
beforehand. The mercury bonds to the chelating agent and therefore shows
up in the urine. But you will not be given that type of urine test by a hospital
which your NHS GP may send you to. A Metal Allergy Patch Test proved positive
with me.
Metal Allergy
Patch Tests

This is a very simple test. I had it done at
the Royal London Dental Hospital, Whitechapel, London, E1 by a Professor
Martin Thornhill, who I understand is no longer at that hospital but is in
the U.S.A. I don't, however, know if anyone else has taken his place. I had
to wait quite a number of months for Prof. Thornhill to arrive at the hospital.
But I'm sure there MUST be another NHS hospital somewhere that will also
do such tests. I was originally sent to Eastman's Dental Hospital, Grays
Inn Road, WC2 but after waiting 6 months for an appointment I saw a Consultant
who told me that they didn't do any tests at all for mercury toxicity as
mercury was COMPLETELY SAFE!!
The test at the Royal London was a very simple
test. A very large patch was placed on my arm after tiny amounts of mercury,
palladium, copper, zinc and other metals as well as white composite material
had been placed in minute "dishes" on the patch. That was on the Monday morning.
I had to return on the Friday morning. During the days I had the patch on
I was very unwell to say the least. Many of my symptoms appeared but were
magnified many times but apart from that there was no itching which I thought
would happen.
When I returned to the hospital I was taken
into a room. A nurse told me that although I'd not had any itching, if I
did have a problem with mercury or any of the other metals then I would have
itching once the patch was removed. As soon as she pulled the patch off my
arm began to itch and sting like crazy and I could see huge red bumps appearing
on my arm. Apparently the air hitting the skin sets the itching off that's
why I had no itching all week. It was obvious straight away that I did have
a problem with mercury and some of the other metals as those bumps were very
raised, red and itchy compared with some of the others. It was 3 months
before all sign of the bumps disappeared completely.

The
MELISA® Test

The MELISA® Test is very reliable. It was
developed by Professor Vera Stejskal. It is a scientifically-proven blood
test which can diagnose metal allergy.
A MELISA® test puts a range of metals
into contact with the white blood cells in your bloodstream and from there
it measures the reaction. It can also measure the reaction of Thimerosal
which is a mercury based preservative used
in
vaccinations.
The way it works is:
As well as the memory in our brain, we also
have a memory in our immune system. The white blood cells we have in our
bloodstream are our memory cells and they circulate in the blood. Any encounters
with an antigen (a substance such as a toxin or bacteria which stimulates
the production of antibodies) are remembered by the memory cells. When the
white blood cells come up against antigens they will try to destroy what
they see as a foreign invader. This is what signals an allergy. This happens
in a blood sample as well as in the body.
Patients who have a metal allergy will have
memory cells formed from when they were originally exposed to the metal so
in any blood sample there will be memory cells. During the test the lymphocytes
in the blood grow, giving a positive test result.
The MELISA® test can diagnose allergy
to around 40 different metals (including 4 different types of mercury: inorganic,
methyl, ethyl and phenyl) and many chemicals incuding formaldehyde. It can
also diagnose Borrelia (Lyme Disease) and Candida.
The MELISA® test is named after this
procedure:
Memory Lymphocyte Immuno Stimulation
Assay.
The MELISA® tests' home is The MELISA®
MEDICA FOUNDATION in Stockholm, Sweden. The Foundation dedicates itself to
the science of metal allergy and its use in treating "incurable" diseases
such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME), Multiple Sclerosis and other autoimmune
and allergic diseases. Research has proven that, in the majority of CFS (ME)
patients, hypersensitivity to metals is the main cause. Removal and avoidance
of the metals leads to improved health. Some MS patients have found that
by avoiding the offending metal or removing it (amalgam fillings), which
MELISA® diagnosed them to reacting to they have fully recovered from
their 'MS'.
Prof. Vera Stejskal runs the Foundation. The
Foundation's directors include, Romuald Hudecek, one of the world's leading
experts in amalgam removal and metal-free dentistry, as well
as Birgitta Brunes, GP
who has herself recovered from Multiple
Sclerosis and has written about her experience.
Prof. Stejskal was, at one time, head of
Immunotoxicology at Astra Pharmaceuticals (known as AstraZeneca), where she
played a key role developing Losec, a multi-billion-dollar stomach ulcer
drug and is now Associated Professor of Immunology at Stockholm University.
She has written numerous
articles
on metal allergy and gives lectures
frequently. She has also been an advisor to the World Health Organisation.
In 2002 she was called as an expert witness to a US Congressional Committee
looking into the safety of vaccines and thimerosal allergy.
The Cost of a MELISA®
Test
Currently, (March 2005), the price of a test
is £20 per metal, £200 for a 10 metal panel and £300 for a
20 metal panel (for patients with amalgam or gold
fillings.)
A doctor or dentist can refer you for a
MELISA® test. A sample of your blood is taken and shipped to the nearest
MELISA® lab. There is a MELISA®
clinic in London at:

Lymphocyte Sensitivity
Test
There is a test called a Lymphocyte Sensitivity
Test which you can have to find out if mercury or other metals are causing
you a health problems. Biolab Medical Unit (UK) is a medical laboratory that
specialises in Nutritional and Environmental
Medicine. PLEASE DO NOT
CONFUSE THIS WITH THE
MELISSA®
TEST. ONLY MELISSA CAN DO A MELISSA
TEST!
The way it works is:
Lymphocytes are separated from a blood sample
and incubated with heat-activated microscopic glass beads. The adhering
lymphocytes are then visualised by video-phase contrast microscopy.
Microcapillary electrodes are used to measure the resting potential of a
series of lymphocytes and minute quantities of the test substance are directly
applied to the cell membrane. The change in resting potential is recorded
for a sufficient number of cells to give a reliable indication of the degree
of sensitivity. For each test substance, we report a numerical value derived
from the average change in resting potential. Values below 100 are considered
to be normal. Values up to 1000 are seen in a marked
sensitivity.
The Cost:
A Mercury Sensitivity Test costs £50 but
you can have other elements tested at the same time for £10 for each
additional element. There is also a Metals Sensitivity Test which costs £97
and this tests for mercury, nickel, silver, cadmium, copper, lead and gold.
Not everyone who has a problem with mercury
will get a positive test and if you really do suspect you are suffering mercury
toxicity it is a good idea to have a Kelmer test soon afterwards. A
Kelmer test is a urine test which is performed before and after you take
a chelating agent so that the mercury has something to stick to and can be
released from the body via the urine. It checks the mercury and creatinine
levels in the body. A Kelmer test costs £40.
You can find Biolab at the corner of Weymouth
Street and Hallam Street (5 minutes from Great Portland Street and Regent's
Park stations and 10 minutes walk from Oxford Circus.
Although Biolab is a private unit, if your
doctor or consultant agrees to pay the bill they will do the tests for
you.
The test can be done by post, but samples
must arrive at Biolab within 24 hours.
You can get more information by contacting
Dr. Mark Howard at Biolab on

Toxic Hair Analysis

A test for metal toxicity can also be done
by using a sample of your hair. This can be done by post and is arranged
by Great Smokies Laboratory in the USA. They have been doing tests for over
20 years and are reliable. The test shows the degree of toxicity in 12 elements
including mercury also 15 essential nutrients.
This test has to be arranged by a practitioner
of some kind. Pam Clewley, a fellow sufferer, has a diploma in Nutrition
and can arrange this for you. The cost is £45 and £1 for
postage.
