| Lithuania
in NATO - Thank You for Your Support!!!
A milestone in the history of the Republic
of Lithuania occurred on March 29, 2004, when Lithuania was formally admitted
into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. For more than a decade, the
Lithuanian-American Community has strongly supported NATO membership for
Lithuania as a means of achieving long-lasting peace and stability in a part
of Europe that has endured much suffering at the hands of aggressor nations.
As stated in the historic
United
States-Baltic Charter of Partnership, signed by President Clinton and
the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, on January 16, 1998, a
secure future for Lithuania is clearly in the best interests of the United
States.
The government of Lithuania has made
substantial efforts to become a reliable member of the NATO alliance. As
described in the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign
Affairs NATO WebSite, Lithuania has prepared for NATO membership by making
a firm commitment to democratic government, carrying out military reforms
to achieve NATO standards, and maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring
nations.
The Lithuanian-American Community
of New York offers heartfelt thanks to President George W. Bush for the strong
support for Lithuania's admission into NATO that he expressed on March 29,
2004, as well as for his deeply moving speech to the people of Lithuania
on November 23, 2002, in Vilnius. We strongly urge everyone to write letters
of thanks to the President, or to call the White House comments line at
202-456-1111, to express our sincere gratitude. (
If you wish to use
our sample letter to thank the President, click here .)
On May 8, 2003, the United States
Senate ratified the admission of Lithuania and six other nations into NATO
by a vote of 96-0! We urge you to contact your Senators to thank them for
their support for Lithuania's admission into NATO. Also, be sure to also
ask your Senators and Congressman to join the congressional
Baltic Caucus - the
goal of the Baltic Caucus
is to keep legislators informed of issues related to the Baltic nations.
The Baltic Caucus is
chaired by Congressmen John Shimkus and Dennis Kucinich in the House of
Representatives, and by Senators Richard Durbin and Gordon Smith in the Senate.
If you have trouble locating your Senators
or Congressman, use the
"Find Your Elected
Officials" feature at the
C-SPAN website.
All you need to do is type in your Zip Code, and the C-SPAN site will return
the names of both of your Senators and your Congressman. (Then just click
on each name to retrieve your Senators' and Congressman's mailing address
and phone number.)
