SCENE ONE

SUN AND WIND ARE STANDING TOGETHER.

TRAVELLER 1 and TRAVELLER 2 ENTER, WEARING
CAPES. SUN AND WIND WATCH THEM AS THEY
COME ACROSS THE STAGE.

RAIN RAINETH GENTLY IN THE DISTANCE,
SINGING SOFTLY, "Hey, ho, the wind and the rain
and the rain it raineth every day "(Shakespeare)]

WIND:       Look, Sun -What fun!

                    Foolish mortals.

Go on - make them run ...

SUN:         Shh! What they are saying?

TWO:         I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm cold

It's hard to keep going when you're old, old, old.

ONE:         You're as old as you feel, just wait and see.

TWO:         Right now, I feel like a hot cup of tea.

[SUN AND WIND LAUGH AT THE JOKE]

[TRAVELLER 2 MIMES POURING TEA FROM A FLASK
INTO ONE TEACUP AND STARTS TO DRINK]

ONE:           May I have some? -

TWO:          There's only enough left for one.

ONE:          Please have it all. You're more thirsty than me..

I know how much you wanted

To have tea at the sea.

I wish there was something I could do,

To cheer you up.  Please don't be blue!

SCENE TWO

[RAIN NOTICES THE TRAVELLERS AND
DECIDES TO CHEER THEM UP BY GENTLY
RAINING ON THEM]

RAIN:        Take off your coats and feel my soothing rain

Rejoice that Spring has come again.

Nothing will grow without Rain ...

I bring flowers to the desert

And life to the Plain ....

TWO:         Oh dear, oh dear, oh woe is me

These raindrops falling in my tea

                    Have made it cold.

RAIN:        The birds and the animals wait for me

To fill the rivers which run to the sea.

TWO:        Oh make it stop, this plop, plop, plop.

                    My feet are so soggy,

                    My toes will drop off!

ONE:         This rain give me a pain!

RAIN:         Fear me when I am angry.

I'll send black clouds to hide the sun

And lashing rain to make you run.

Since you spurn my gentle spring.

Gales and Storms and Floods I bring.

TWO:         Hurry up!  Let's try!

The sooner we hurry, the faster we'll be dry.

ONE:         I can't hurry any faster.

                  I have bone china joints

                    That clink when I walk

                    And click when I bend

                    And crack  when I talk.

                    It's very hard to hurry

When you're getting on in years -

TWO:          I'm so wet, I know I'm crying

But I can't see my tears!

                    I hate this rain!

ONE:         I hate it too!

[TRAVELLERS START TO CRY]

[RAIN STARTS TO CRY]

RAIN:        I wanted them to enjoy their day

Take off their coats and dance in my spray.

But all they want is for me to go away

SCENE THREE

SUN:       Poor Rain just wanted them to take off their coats

WIND:       Silly Rain! I always find Rain a bit wet.

[SHOUTS AT RAIN]  Go Away, Rain!

                    Stop being so wishy-washy!

                    And stop that drizzling!

                    I am The Wind

                    Who can compell

Travellers to take off their coats.

I have the Power, I have the Right

To blow off their coats, day or night!

SUN:          No, Gentle Persuasion is what you need

WIND:        'Persuasion'
                    - I don't even know the meaning of the word.

SUN:         It means to encourage, to convince, to sway --

WIND:        I know what it means.

                    I just don't approve.

                    Force is a Quicker Way

                    To make their Coats Move!

SUN:         Politeness, Kindness, Consideration

                    Is the Better Way

WIND:        Nonsense. You need force

                    To make people obey.

SUN:         Shall we bet? You go first.

Blow hard as you like, do your worst.

I'll hide behind these clouds till you are done

Then you will see who has won.

[SUN HIDES IN AUDIENCE]

WIND:       I am the Wind and I blow strong

Strong ... stronger ... hard and long .....

Take off your coats, This I Say:

                    Remove your coats.

                    You dare not NOT obey!

SUN: [TO WIND]  That isn't even good grammar

                    And it's VERY rude.

WIND:       But watch! It works!

TWO:        The Rain was horrid,  the Wind is worse

                    The Weather is beastly,

ONE:            This journey's a curse!

RAIN (insulted): 'Horrid!'

WIND (insulted):   'Worse!'

RAIN (still insulted):   'Beastly!'

WIND (more insulted):   'Curse!'

If it's a curse that you want

                    A curse you will get

                    A lesson in Weather

                    You'll never forget!

                    Windstorm, tornado, hurricane, monsoon,

                    Rushing, raging, blustering doom!

[WIND FALLS DOWN OUT OF BREATH]

SUN:      What an old blow-hard you are!  Are you finished?

WIND:       No, I'm just getting my second wind......

                    Right. Join me, Rain!

Gale and lightning Joining with thunder.

Behold my might! Like a roaring storm,

                    Like a raging typhoon

Like a whirlwind I shall blow

                    Your coats to the moon!

RAIN:         And Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.

[THE TRAVELLERS HOLD THEIR COATS EVEN CLOSER]

WIND:       And yet still they disobey!   I give up!

This is very bad for my image, you know.

[WIND STARTS TO CRY]

SCENE FOUR

SUN:         Oh, hush, old friend, I'll make things right,

                    Watch Gentle Persuasion conquer Might.

Polite Negotiation and Common Logic too

Will convince these travellers the right thing to do.

                    Behold!

I am the Sun. I am the Bright Star,

Giving warmth and light to Earth.

Travellers - feel my warm rays.

                    Take off Your Coats

                    And be happy.

                    Sunny, Bright,

                    Warm, Light,

                    Cheerful, Luminous

                    Fine and Clear.

                    Sun-lit, Sun-drenched

                    Cheerful Cheer!

ONE:          Oh, I feel so warm, I perspire ---

TWO:           --- I glow!

ONE:           Our heavy coats just have to go!

TWO:         Oh lovely, splendishous

                    Tingly, wringly, mingly.

                    Scrumptious and lovely,

                    Gorgeous and warm ....

ONE:         Oh no! My old friend !

                    We'll get sunstroke and burned.

And it's all my fault ....

                    What a lesson we've learned!

Nature is horrid, Nature's a pain!

SUN:          Join me Wind. Join me Rain.

Help make their  world rainbow-bright again.

Blow gently, gentle breeze, to dry

Their clothes, the grass, their tears, their sighs.

RAIN:        And make rainbow, rainbow, rainbow skies!

TWO:        Look! At the end of the rainbow!

ONE:         Is it a pot of gold?

TWO:         No, it's the Sunset -  and it's teatime

So that  means that way must be West

If we want to go home - that direction is best.

ONE:         Please don't change your plans because of me.

I'll try to go on - though it hurts my bad knee.

TWO:         My friend, it's never too late.

                    When we travel together

                    I find you delightful

                    Whatever the weather.

                    Now you rest your legs

                    And I'll make tea

                    Where ever we are

Is where we want to be.

WIND,RAIN AND SUN:   Ahhh!

SCENE 5

RAIN:        Our tale is done and the Moral is clear:

                    Might  is not Right.

                    The only Power you have

                    Over people is Gentle Persuasion

SUN:         And if we all join together

                    All things give us pleasure

                    Whatever the weather.

WIND:       Sun. Wind.....Wind. Rain.

                    We need everyone!

SUN:         Join in our circle.

Let's sit on the grass and sing songs, you and me.

TRAVELLER ONE:

I'm afraid we're still lost and the grass is all wet.

I can't remember directions and things I know, I forget.

The sun is too hot. We'll get sunstroke and burned.

And it is all my fault .... What a lesson we've learned!

SUN:

Join me Wind. Quickly! Join me Rain.

Help make the world rainbow-bright again.

Blow gently, gentle breeze, to dry

Their clothes, the grass, their tears, their sighs

RAIN:

And make rainbow, rainbow, rainbow skies!

TRAVELLER ONE:

I'm sorry I can't travel faster with my bad knee.

I've made you behind schedule and it's too late for tea.

TRAVELLER TWO:

My old friend, it's never too late. When we travel together

I find you delightful Whatever the weather.

Now you rest your legs and I'll make tea

Where ever we are is where we want to be

SCENE 5:

RAIN:

Our tale is done and the Moral is clear.

WIND: Might is not right.

The only power you have

Over people is gentle persuasion

SUN:

And if we all join together

All things give us pleasure

Whatever the weather

EVERYONE:

Sun. Wind.....Wind. Rain.

Hand in hand, be friends again.

WIND:

Wind needs Rain.

RAIN:

Rain needs Sun

SUN:

Join hands with your neighour

We need everyone!

Join in our circle.

Join in our fun .Join in our song

And our play will be done.

EPILOGUE:

[SUN, WIND, RAIN, TRAVELLERS SING]:

After the sun, the rain

After the rain, the sun

This is the way of life

Till the work be done.

Wind and Sun and Moon and Rain

All is right and bright again

We need the Wind

We need the Rain

To make the World seem bright Again

We need the Moon.We need the Sun

We need them all. Our tale is done.

First Draft
30th March 2006

...
A Play-in-Progress
Draft One of Five
SCENE ONE

[A DESERTED LANDSCAPE. SUN  AND WIND
ARE STANDING TOGETHER.

TRAVELLER 1 AND TRAVELLER 2 ENTER.
SUN AND WIND WATCH THEM AS THEY CROSS
THE STAGE. RAIN RAINETH GENTLY IN THE
DISTANCE, SINGING SOFTLY "Hey, Ho, the wind
and the rain and the rain it raineth every day.' ]

TRAVELLER TWO:

You've made us walk and walk

And talk, and talk, and talk

TRAVELLER ONE:

Oh dear me, my friend

I don't know the way!

I am confused ---

TRAVELLER TWO:

--- All I can say

is I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm cold

I'm feeling so old, old, old, old

TRAVELLER ONE:

You're as old as you feel, just wait and see.

TRAVELLER TWO:

Right now, I feel like a hot cup of tea.

[SUN and WIND laugh at the joke]

SCENE TWO

[RAIN notices the TRAVELLERS and decides to cheer
them up by raining gently on them]

RAIN:

Travellers - take off your coats and feel my soothing rain

Rejoice that Spring has come again.

Nothing will grow Without Rain

I bring flowers to the desert

And life to the plains .

The birds and the animals wait for me

To fill the rivers which run to the sea.

TRAVELLER TWO:

Oh dear, oh dear, oh woe is me

All these raindrops seem to have gone into my tea.

TRAVELLER ONE:

Oh here comes the  drippy rain

Pouring down my head and face

Oh I am getting soggy all over the place.

Oh stop, please stop, oh stop! stop! stop!

Stupid rain! I'm so wet my toes will drop off!

[RAIN is VERY offended]

RAIN:

"Stupid Rain!" Stupid! …. Stupid YOU!

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid Two!

Fear me when I am angry .

Since you spurn my gentle spring.

Gales and storms and floods I bring.

I'll send black clouds to hide the sun

And lashing rain to make you run.

TRAVELLER TWO:

Oh gosh, oh gosh

I'm catching a cough!

TRAVELLER ONE:

I know how hard it is to travel

When you're getting on in years .....

TRAVELLER TWO:

I'm so wet, I know I'm crying

but I can't see my tears!

[SUN and WIND laugh]

SCENE THREE

WIND:

Look, Sun

What fun!

SUN:

They are using their coats to keep out the rain!

And keeping the wet close and closer again!

WIND

Foolish mortals.

I'll wager they will take their coats off for ME

Within the hour.

I am The Wind

Who can compel

Travellers to take off their coats

They dare not rebel.

For I have the Power I have the Might

To make them take their coats off day or night!

SUN:

You're just an old windbag, it's me, the Sun

Who  makes travellers delight

They will happily do my bidding

Without giving them a fright.

WIND:

Nonsense. You need power

To make people do things right

Let me go first.

[blowing the Travellers about]

I am the Wind and I  blow strong

strong ... stronger ... hard and long .....

TRAVELLER TWO:  [wrapping up warmly]

The Rain was horrid, this Wind was worse

The Weather is beastly,

The journey's a curse!

RAIN (insulted):

'Horrid!'

WIND (insulted) :

'Worse!'

RAIN (still insulted) :

'Beastly!'

WIND (more insulted) :

'Curse!'

If it's a curse that you ask for

A curse you will get

A lesson in Weather

You'll never forget!

Join me Rain!

Strong and stronger and stronger

Along storm comes, the gales and lightening

Joining with thunder

Like a roaring storm, like a raging typhoon

Until I blow the whole world to the moon!

Rush, rage, bluster, tempest, typhoon,

Gale, hurricane, tornado, monsoon

RAIN:

And Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.

[The travellers still have their coats]

SCENE FOUR

[SUN stops the WIND and the RAIN]

SUN:

You've had your turn, now let me see

if Gentleness is more powerful

Than Bluster, let them be.

I am the Sun

I am the red planet

Who gives warmth and light

To Earth

Travellers - Be happy

Take off Your Coats

And feel my warm rays.

Sh! Sh! Sh! Sh!

Sunny, Bright,

Warm, Light

Cheerful, luminous

Fine Clear

Sunlit, sun-drenched

Cheerful Cheer!

TRAVELLER ONE:

Oh come Sun, lovely Sun

Shine on us - shine on me

To keep us warm and so cosy

I feel I must take off my coat

I'm far too warm, I perspire I glow!

My heavy coat just has to go!

TRAVELLER TWO:

Oh lovely, splendishous

Tingly, wringly, mingly.

Scrumptious and lovely, gorgeous and warm

Let's have a picnic, let's have a chat

Let's share our sandwiches and have a nice nap!

Let me take your coat off

You won't have a cough!

TRAVELLER TWO:

My old friend

When we travel together

I find you delightful

Whatever the weather.

Now I'll pass the sugar, you share your tea

Where ever we are is where we want to be

SCENE 5:

RAIN:

Our tale is done

and the Moral, you see

Is that you can Bluster and Blow

And Thunder and Bully

WIND:

And you'll make people sad

And you'll make people cry

But you'll never get your way

Though you try and you try.

SUN:

So take a lesson from the Sun

Be gentle and glow

Smile nicely, be warm,

And people will never say 'no.'

EPILOGUE:

Wind and Sun and Moon and Rain
All is right and bright again
We need the Wind We need the Rain
To make the World seem bright Again
We need the Moon.We  need the Sun
We need them all. Our tale is done.

[Everyone joins hands, sings and dances, encouraging
the audience to sing along:]

After the sun, the rain

After the rain, the sun

This is the way of life

Till the work be done.

..........................................................................................................................

STAGES OF REWRITES
IN THE POETIC PLAY WORKSHOP

draft 1 script
30.01.2006
acting out the parts to
understand the relationships
between the characters
(finding the story)

strengthening the narrative links and transitions
(finding the structure)...............

PROCEDURE. First I told the group the story of The Wind and The Sun
(from Aesop's Fables). We chose roles (Wind, Sun, Traveller) and they
walked through their parts as I told the story again. They mimed their actions,
letting me, as the narrator provide the script. This was to get an idea of the
movement and logic of the story. We added a second Traveller (so that we
could create a relationship between the two friends) and we also added the
character Rain to strengthen the sense of the travellers' alienation from nature.
We walked through the story again, this time allowing each character to
improvise their own speeches to work out their motivation, block out the
structure and break the play into scenes.

At this point, we divided into groups to write the first draft of the script.
Wind and Sun worked on their speeches together, the two travellers wrote
about being tired and lost, cold and wet, and then warmed by the sun. Rain
explored the positive and negative sides of precipitation. We then walked
through the play again, this time with the rough speeches in hand. The final
step for this draft was to put the speeches together to form a script,
provide transitional links, and to reassign lines one person had written
to another character, if it was more appropriate for that character
(creatng characterizing dialogue).

As you can see, first drafts often have awkward use of language (some
of the rhymes aren't quite right and the moral drags on a bit, also, the Sun
isn't 'the red planet' - it's a star). It's a promising start to a play, though,
and an interesting excercise for the poets in assuming a persona. Acting
isn't just acting, it's reacting (and the passive and aggressive roles of the
Sun and Wind will be echoed, in the next draft, by the roles of the
travellers).

--Kim Morrissey

draft 2 script
a sit down workshop, reading through the script
creating characterising dialogue for the characters
(finding the speaker)

strengthening the moral of the story throughout
(finding the focus)

NEEDED: scripts for everyone taking part in the revision.

PROCEDURE: Rewriting the Beginning and Ending of the play.

This rewrite was done on two separate days, first by Kathy, then Islam,
with Kim as their dramaturge. The rewrites came from reading through
the script, rather than watching actors perform. As well as being poets,
Kathy and Islam are talented actors in the Third Age Project's Drama
Club. Their dramatic experience proved useful in creating the second
draft because they are familiar with dramatic techniques (and, more
importantly, know how  an audience of children , our target audience,
will react to the script).

First, Kathy rewrote the play (adding the important devise of the
Traveller coming on, speaking mid-sentence, which meant that  the
audience is invited to over-hear them, creating the dramatic fourth
wall). Islam worked on Kathy's draft, freely rewriting where he
thought necessary and substituting subtext for text where the rhymes
didn't work, but a transition was necessary to tell the story.

Both crossed out speeches and rhymes which didn't work and
tried to create a distinctive character of each part (for instance,
to find characterizing motivation and dialogue to distinguish Traveller 1
from Traveller 2). The narrative flow (the story) was established in the
first draft, but it had to be strengthened (setting up the bet more clearly,
setting out the moral of the story more clearly,   working out the
relationships between Wind, Rain and Sun). It was also important,
because we were writing for children, to set up a respectful moral
attitude to nature).

Workshopping a play is a simple process of re-hearing, and  then
rewriting to find the play you want. The next draft will use actors
from the West Euston Third Age Drama Club in the workshop, so
that the writers are not also performing. This allows them the distance
to consider the play as a whole, rather than from the perspective of
whatever character they happen to be playing.

Drafts from now on will be rewrites to make the sound and
the sense of the play agree, and to heighten the humour, where
appropriate, to engage the audience (adding language to add interest).

IDENTIFYING SOURCES:

After the sun the rain / after the rain the sun
is from:

Glad That I Live Am I
Lizette Woodworth Reese

Glad that I live am I;
That they sky is Blue;
Glad for the country lanes,
And the fall of dew.

After the sun the rain,
After the rain, the sun,
This is the way of life,
Till the work be done.

All that we need to do,
Be we low or high,
Is to see that we grow
Nearer the sky.

[TUNE can be sung by Patsy and Pat]

"Wind and Sun and Moon and Rain"
[an old folk song. Tune can be sung by Kathy]

draft 3 script
a half-day workshop with actors
from the Third Age Drama Project
to act out the play, scripts in hand

rewriting for sense and sound
to increase the drama by increasing
conflict and tension.
(finding the focus)

adding language to add interest for the audience
(finding the image)

NEEDED: Five actors, with complete scripts, with each script having its
character's speech highlighted, so the speeches are easy to find. Complete scripts
for every writer taking part in the revision.

PROCEDURE: A script-in-hand read through with actors. The actors
performed the play twice. While the actors were performing, each writer made
notes in their own copy of the script, concerning which lines and scenes seemed
to work well and which passages had to be reconsidered. For the final hour
of the workshop, the writers discussed the script, line-by-line, making revisions
and noting problems with transitions.

In addition to structure and characters being revised, simple typographical
errors are being corrected as we work through each version of the script.

Although the motivations for the WIND, SUN and RAIN seem to be
psychologically sound in this draft, the characters of the two travellers
need to be more carefully considered. We want to develop the character
of TRAVELLER ONE (and consider the traveller's disability, as we will
be performing this script on September 14th for a Conference on
Arthritis sponosred by the Third Age Project).

------------------------------

DISCARDED PASSAGE [DRAFT TWO,  END OF SCENE 2]:
This would provide a useful bit of audience participation, but it
interferes with the RAIN crying. This link may be written into a l
ater draft, however, at this stage, there is no point  to which
it can be moved without interfering with the narrative.

TRAVELLER TWO:

Let's find the Sun ....  where's the Sun?
[TRAVELLER WAITS UNTIL THE AUDIENCE
POINTS THE SUN OUT]
Ah --- that way must be West
So that way would be best!

---------------------------------------

For the next workshop we will be using five actors for a half-day
workshop which will allow the writers to concentrate on the whole
play rather than be distracted by playing a part. We will be concentrating
on the speeches of TRAVELLER ONE and TRAVELLER TWO, to try
to make the parts more equal. At the moment, Traveller Two has most of
the lines. With our next draft we will concentrate on creating a distinct character
and a distinct vocabulary for
TRAVELLER ONE.

SCENE ONE

TRAVELLER ONE:
I'm sorry I can't travel faster with my bad knee.
I know we're behind schedule and it's too late for tea.

TRAVELLER TWO:
I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm cold
It's hard to keep going when you're old, old, old.

TRAVELLER ONE: You're as old as you feel, just wait and see.

TRAVELLER TWO: Right now, I feel like a hot cup of tea.

SCENE TWO

TRAVELLER TWO:
Oh dear, oh dear, oh woe is me
These raindrops falling in my tea
Have made it cold.

TRAVELLER TWO:
Oh make it stop, this plop, plop, plop.
My feet are so soggy,
My toes will drop off!

TRAVELLER TWO:
Hurry up!  Let's try!
The faster we hurry, the sooner we'll be dry.

TRAVELLER ONE:
It's very hard to hurry
When you're getting on in years -

TRAVELLER TWO:
I'm so wet, I know I'm crying
But I can't see my tears!
I hate this rain!

TRAVELLER ONE:
I hate it too!

SCENE THREE

TRAVELLER TWO: [WRAPPING UP WARMLY]
The Rain was horrid,  the Wind is worse
The Weather is beastly,
This journey's a curse!

SCENE FOUR

TRAVELLER ONE: Oh, I feel so warm, I perspire ...

TRAVELLER TWO: ... I glow!

TRAVELLER ONE: Our heavy coats just have to go!

TRAVELLER TWO:
Oh lovely, splendishous
Tingly, wringly, mingly.
Scrumptious and lovely,
Gorgeous and warm

TRAVELLER ONE:
The sun is too hot,
We'll get sunstroke and burned.
And it is all my fault .... What a lesson we've learned!

TRAVELLER ONE:
We should hurry on - though it hurts my bad knee.
I'm sorry we're still lost and it's too late for tea.

TRAVELLER TWO:

My old friend, it's never too late.
When we travel together
I find you delightful
Whatever the weather.
Now you rest your legs
And I'll make tea
Where ever we are
Is where we want to be.
