JACKSON COUNTY VOLUNTEERS AGAINST POUND SEIZURE
JACKSON, MICHIGAN

Who We Are

A grassroots, all-volunteer (nobody gets paid), diverse group of people who formed a group to educate about pet safety and pet issues and stop pound seizure because we care for our children, our pets and our community.

POUND SEIZURE IS THE SELLING OF OUR LOST AND HOMELESS DOGS AND CATS FROM THE JACKSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER TO ANY PLACE WHERE THEY WILL LIKELY END UP IN RESEARCH.

PLEASE REMEMBER--WE ARE NOT AN ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP. STOPPING POUND SEIZURE WILL NOT HARM RESEARCH BECAUSE RESEARCHERS CAN BUY ANIMALS FROM CLASS “A” DEALERS WHO RAISE ANIMALS FOR RESEARCH.

We believe lost pets have a better chance of getting returned to their owners when pound seizure is stopped. Homeless pets also will have a better chance-- to get into rescues, humane societies or no-kill shelters, be adopted from the shelter, or if there is no humane alternative, be given a quick and painless death as a last resort. Any other choice is unacceptable and counter-productive to the purpose of any animal shelter. These are just some of the reasons why the National Animal Control Association, which sets the guidelines for all the shelters in the United States, is against pound seizure!!!

Since there are various groups and individuals working on this issue and since we often do not know each other except by email or are even able to work together because of schedules, this no-frills, easy and quick access website has been formed to keep us all updated on the progress of our campaign. This website will exist until the day comes when it is not needed anymore. Make no mistake--we are a dedicated and determined group with NEW LEADERSHIP AND NEW IDEAS and we are not going away!

This chart proves that stopping pound seizure would save money for our county, lower the risk of dog bites, help law enforcement and animal control and protect our lost and homeless pets! It’s a win/win situation for everyone!

In AAC’s 10 years of experience with the pound seizure issue, in every case where pound seizure was banned, animal services programs and adoption rates improved, and rates of euthanasia declined. Data from Calgary, Alberta, where Animal Services stopped giving to research in 1993 is indicative and compelling.

(NOTE: Totals may appear incorrect. A small number of animals identified as "Others" — which include, for example, animals still held at the end of a year — have been omitted for clarity.)

When pound seizure was routinely practiced in Calgary in the mid to late 1980s, only about 50-60% of impounded animals were returned to their families or adopted; 30-40% were euthanized. By 1999, almost 97% of animals were being returned to their families or adopted, and the euthanization rate dropped to around 2%. Another important direct benefit enjoyed by Calgarians because of their Councillors’ decision to implement a progressive animal services program, which included a pound seizure ban, is the decline in dog bite incidents: from 1.03 bites per 1,000 in 1984 to 0.45 bites per 1,000 in 1998 — a 56% decline.

The reason for these improvements is that when communities adopt animal services policies that use "best practices," and serve the best interests of the animals and companion animal owners — rather than the interests of researchers — public support increases, and pride, morale, and job performance improves among animal services staff. This in turn results in lower costs and dramatically improved effectiveness of animal services programs.

The evidence from across North America is unequivocal. By failing to ban pound seizure and implement "best practices" animal services programs, like those in Calgary, Toronto, and other progressive municipalities, Winnipeg City Councillors are failing the voters of Winnipeg who share their homes and families with companion animals.

Abe Lincoln – Our Most Beloved President

In his July 27, 1848 speech to the U.S. House of Representatives, Abraham Lincoln stated: “You violated the primary, the cardinal, the one great living principle of all Democratic representative government—the principle, that the representative is bound to carry out the known will of his constituents .” I read this quote to our commissioners but President Lincoln’s patriotic words had no effect on the majority of our commissioners. Abraham Lincoln also showed compassion for animals.

For those of us who are Christians: Proverbs Chapter 31, Verse 8 reads: “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.” This means speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Another one of my favorites is “Every creature of God is good.” Matthew 5:7 says “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”

A HUGE THANK YOU especially to:

Sawyer’s does a beautiful job and is a printing and copying specialist: business cards, forms, flyers, brochures, envelopes, letterhead, fax service and laminating.

Creative Graphics
430 N. Mechanic St., Jackson, MI, (517)784-0391; does an awesome job on letterheads, envelopes, graphics, photographs, catalogs, brochures, presentations, menus, flyers.

Nature’s Splendor Herb Store, 2575 B Airport Road, Jackson, MI, 49202, 782-1741 (this store is beside the Meijers Gas Station). Wonderful products!!

Ritz Camera, Westwood Mall, Jackson, 782-9466—I used to think that all photofinishing was the same until I found Ritz Camera! They are photo experts in every sense of the word!!

Personal Touch Pet Grooming – 3980 Ann Arbor Road, Jackson, MI, 49202, 764-5105.
I was very nervous about taking one of our dogs to a groomer for her first time—her coat had changed texture and gotten matted in some areas and I couldn’t get the tangles out. She is a “special needs” dog with health issues including severe allergies and seizures and lots of stress can bring on seizures even though she is on medication. Wendy did a wonderful job of talking gently to her throughout the visit as I waited in the waiting area! Not only did our dog not seizure, she came out looking like Miss America!! Personal Touch is just up the street from the Michigan Avenue Meijers—Michigan Avenue becomes Ann Arbor Road. She is usually closed on Wednesdays—call for an appointment!!
