Software for Mechanical Engineers by J.P. Reznicek

Welcome to my professional toolbox.

Over the years of my professional career, I have developed programs Cofea and Inertia as I was in constant need to do stress calculations (preliminary or final) although I was not specialized in stress analysis or perhaps rather because of it. The programs eventually proved to be one of my most useful tools. I hope you shall find them interesting too.

Cofea is three-dimensional finite element analysis program, Inertia is calculator of moment of inertia for any section composed from straight lines and arcs. You may decide whether the programs are for you by examining the manuals. Programs are written in Visual Basic 4 and I shall e-mail the source code to anyone who is seriously interested in their further development.

  1. Inertia manual
  2. Cofea manual
  3. Inertia zip file
  4. Cofea zip file
  5. Vb40032.dll zip file

In my practice as piping engineer, besides the standard stress and pressure drop calculations, I had to solve many not so standard problems as vibration stress for plant life assessment program, transient forces for safety valves outlet pipes, condensate flashing flow, heat loss and transfer, seismic assessment, water hammer etc. If you, or your company, have problem in these or related areas, and you want to discuss them than you are invited to contact me.

Both programs has been recently updated. Zip files are complete with manuals, you do not have to download manuals separately.

To install the programs, download and unzip the applicable zip file into a folder (directory) you want to use for this purpose. You may name the folders the same as the programs e.g. Cofea or Inertia. Good programs for unzipping is e.g. Winzip or PKunzip. After installation you have to configure the programs by specifying path to a browser, manual, DXF generator and DXF viewer (MS Word is a good DXF viewer - be sure the proper converter is installed on your computer). Default configuration is based on standard installation of Windows 9* or ME, but location of required program files as Winword.exe, Notepad.exe, Iexplore.exe on each computer may differ. The configuration is stored in hidden files Cofea.ini or Inertia.ini, and it must be done only for the first time the program is run. There are no special requirements for uninstalling; programs are not registered. Simply delete the folder where the program is installed and everything within that directory.

To run programs, you have to have file Visual Basic file Vb40032.dll in Windows/System or Windows/System32 directory. Usually this file is shipped with the Windows package. If you do not have the file, you have to download it too.
