The Frankie Kennedy Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory
of a wonderful Irish musician whose contributions to Irish culture were much
appreciated by the members of the GWCC. The scholarship is intended to provide
financial assistance to young performers who have successfully competed in
the U.S. and will travel to Ireland to participate in a major competition.
1.) The application process is open to any young peformer who is a member, or the child of a member, in good standing, of the Greater Washington Ceili Club.
2.) The Frankie Kennedy Memorial Scholarship may be awarded to a young performer who has successfully competed in a U.S. regional competition and who will go on to compete and study at a recognized competition held in Ireland.
3.) The amount of the scholarship will be approximately $200 to $250 dollars per student, depending upon the availability of funds from the GWCC treasury.
4.) Each applicant must write a letter to the GWCC, outlining his/her desire and need for such a scholarship, listing the U.S. competition results, demonstrating at least some knowledge of Frankie Kennedy's music, and listing the Irish competition and dates.
5.) Upon return to the U.S., each scholarship recipient is expected to submit a short report about the travel/competition experience to the Board of the Greater Washington Ceili Club. [This is more commonly known as a 'thank you' note.]
6.) Each scholarship recipient is invited to perform at a mutually agreed upon venue for the GWCC community. [This usually occurs as short piece at one of the monthly ceilis or at another club function. The date, time, and length of the performance will be mutually agreed upon and is usually done within a year of the scholarship.]

The Greater Washington Ceili Club (GWCC) Irish Cultural Experience Awards have been established to award grants of up to $250 to active club members in good standing who wish to travel to Ireland to participate in a structured learning experience from a recognized instructor or institution. The experience must encompass course, class, workshop or research activities related to Irish culture, society or history.
Recipients must be able to document their activities with receipts, letters, acceptance notices or other written material. Upon return, recipients will be expected to share their experience with club members at an appropriate venue to be agreed upon by the GWCC Scholarship Committee.
Preference will be given to GWCC members who are studying in Ireland for the first time. Club officers and board members are not eligible for travel grants while holding office.
Awards will be given throughout the calendar year (January through December). Funds are subject to availability. Funds not distributed will be returned to the GWCC Scholarship Fund.
Applications for grants will be available from GWCC Scholarship Committee members. Announcements concerning the application process and awards will be published in the GWCC newsletter.
All award decisions will be made at the discretion of the GWCC board and will be decided by a quorum vote at the board's monthly meetings. All board decisions will be final.
Applicants must fill out a Travel Grant Application Form (available from GWCC Scholarship Committee members and in the newsletter) at least two months prior to planned departure date for Ireland. Applicants will be notified of the board's decision by mail. For information, please contact Beth Curren.
