The British School of Osteopathy, founded in London in 1917, was the first training establishment in Britain. Other Schools have since been set up, governed by stringent training regulations and requiring a minimum of 4 years for students to qualify.
It is a testament to the effectiveness of Osteopathy, that it has not only survived as a distinct form of medical treatment, but became the first complimentary health care profession to be accorded statutory recognition with the introduction of the Osteopaths Act 1993.
The General Osteopathic Council (GOC) was set up in 1998 to promote and regulate the Osteopathic profession. Their website: www.osteopathy.org.uk - can provide further information.
