Magic Lantern

Kaman Aerospace Corporation has successfully developed important new applications for electro-optics technology based on the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) concept that uses laser light energy to detect objects in the water.   The MAGIC LANTERN sensor system, developed by Kaman Aerospace Corporation using LIDAR technology, presently provides the U.S. Navy with an advanced sea mine detection capability.   Prototypes of this system were tested beginning in 1988 and displayed a unique means to rapidly detect and localize moored sea mines.   Subsequent to this initial testing, the MAGIC LANTERN performance and capabilities were again put to the test in a wartime scenario during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm following the near sinking of the USS Samuel B. Roberts by an inexpensive mine in the Arabian Gulf in 1988.   Successful deployment of the MAGIC LANTERN to the Gulf during Desert Shield/Desert Storm by HSL-34 and HSL-36 significantly enhanced the mine hunting capability of the allied forces.   New MAGIC LANTERN Advanced Development Models are currently the only airborne laser mine detection systems qualitatively and quantitatively tested and operationally assessed by the U.S. Navy, having exceed all operating criteria.   The MAGIC LANTERN sensor system has been integrated into the Kaman SH-2G helicopter, currently the only aircraft certified to fly the system.
