CSS is the source for research, development, test, and evaluation for Airborne MCM. They provide the active fleet with new systems to counter new mine threats, new tactics to take advantage of improved systems, upgrades to existing systems to provide better performance, safety, or even "do-ability", and life cycle management for equipment to ensure the longest service life possible. They have even provided rapid response teams to assist during exercises and real-world crisis situations. Their personnel have had the distinction of providing expert guidance to foreign MCM units, including those from NATO and Japan. CSS maintains a strong working relationship with the helicopter MCM squadrons at Corpus Christi, Texas (HM-15) and Norfolk, Virginia (HM-14), frequently soliciting their input and insight into the system development process. The team also includes personnel from the squadrons at NAWC-Pax River, who provide their expertise in aircraft design capabilities and limitations. Their industry partners include EDO Corporation, Northrup-Grumman, Raytheon, Kaman Aerospace, Government Systems Segment, General Scientific Corporation, Analysis & Technology, and ARINC. Many things are happening in the world of Airborne MCM, such as improvements in communications, tactics, and intelligence. CSS serves the Airborne MCM community with a full service laboratory to meet their changing needs. Their highly successful government/industry teams have produced several notable products with several more in the pipeline. Air Operations schedules flight operations in support of the station's work in Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation of Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapons Systems. The Aviation Unit employs two MH-53E mine countermeasures helicopters, and an HH-1N helicopter to support training and project test and evaluation flights. To accomplish these tasks, the Aviaton Unit of Coastal Systems Station is assigned five officers (naval aviators) and thirteen enlisted (naval air crewman) qualified in AMCM operations. The Aviation Unit Air Maintenance performs organizational and limited intermediate level maintenance on two Sikorsky MH-53E helicopters and one HH-1N helicopter. All three aircraft are utilized in support of Coastal Systems Station's Airborne Mine Countermeasures Research, Development, Test and Evaluation projects. Air Maintenance employs one officer, fourteen enlisted, and sixteen civilian aircraft maintenance personnel. |
