Any action to counter the effectiveness of and/or reduce the probability of damage to surface ships or submarines from underwater mines is defined as Mine Countermeasures (MCM). The primary mission of the AMCM Force is to maintain the capability to rapidly deploy to any region of the world and conduct independent or integrated MCM operations. These AMCM missions consist of both minehunting and minesweeping missions from an airborne platform. The minehunting mission involves minefield reconnaissance to determine mine presence, density and location; as well as search, detection, and classification of mine-like objects for subsequent marking and avoidance, neutralization, or destruction. The minesweeping mission is performed by mechanical and influence sweeps that counter moored and influence mines. The powerful U.S. NAVY MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter is the latest version of the Sikorsky H-53 helicopter series configured specifically for AMCM. The following are some of the minesweeping and minehunting systems which enable HM squadrons to neutralize contact, magnetic, acoustic and combination influence mines. These systems are deployed and towed behind the helicopter in order to minimize risk to the crews while detecting or neutralizing the mines. |
