Dr. Richard Bruno, Chairperson, International Post-Polio Task Force and Director, The Post-Polio Institute at Englewood (NJ) Hospital and Medical Center has taken the concept of stress reduction beyond just telling you how to do it. He has created a How to STOP being VAMPIRE BAIT that provides the opportunity to be an active participant in the process through homework exercises done over four weeks. It's surprising how much of a difference there is in your personal reaction to what you read when you have hands-on participation. VAMPIRE BAITalso gives you the opportunity to go back and reread what you write, allowing you to determine if you are making headway in changing your life to reduce the stressors that may be doing major damage to your body. Dr. Bruno discusses the differences between acute and chronic stress. Again you participate by writing, giving you more opportunity to learn about the things going on in your life that you can change -- and the things you may need to avoid -- to reduce stress.
VAMPIRE BAIToffers opportunities to help you discover triggers and patterns of stress. It also provides guidelines to help you change how you have lived, making it possible to live more comfortably: how to listen to your better judgment instead of the old messages of 'I should' that play in our heads; how to find alternatives to many of life's demands; how to ask 'why' you do what you do at work and at home; how to just say "No" to The Vampires who would use you up, and even how to handle the guilt that we put on ourselves for not "doing it all."
Finally VAMPIRE BAIT aids in teaching you to listen to your body. We get so many messages from our bodies, but most polio survivors (and others with disabilities and chronic illnesses) have been taught to ignore those messages. We can no longer do that and stay healthy. But changing a lifetime of behaviors is difficult. Dr. Bruno outlines some basics that can be helpful in making the changes that can make a difference in your life.

The Post-Polio Institute
at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center
Dr. Richard Bruno, Director of The Post-Polio Institute, performs a psychophysiological evaluation that explores the practical and emotional impact of your new symptoms and documents the physical and emotional stressors that are the leading causes of PPS. A comprehensive medical examination that documents your medical history, new physical symptoms and rules out other medical problems that could be causing your new symptoms is also performed. The entire evaluation takes about three hours and now costs $1,000.00
Physical therapists assess muscle weakness and pain, evaluate posture, walking and assistive devices, past and present, such as braces and crutches;
Occupational therapists assess how you use your body to do work and daily activities and identify ways to simplify your work, conserve energy and decrease PPS symptoms;
Weekly individual stress-management psychotherapy will help you identify and reduce emotional stress and start the often difficult process of accepting the changes in your lifestyle that are necessary to treat PPS.
Patients also have a dietary consultation to discuss increasing morning protein intake, reducing weight or preventing weight gain;
Sleep, breathing and swallowing evaluations may also be recommended.
Intercontinental Assessment Service:
Polio survivors often have trouble finding a knowledgeable doctor to complete their Social Security Disability applications. And, since 18% of polio survivors have their PPS begin after an accident of some kind, very few polio survivors have access to a doctor who can serve as an expert witness and testify that PPS are sometimes accident- or work-related.
Drs. Bruno has been providing evaluations for Social Security Disability and accident-related PPS, performing extensive written reviews of medical records, and serving as expert witnesses for over a decade. As co-author of the Social Security Administration's 1987 POMS for Evaluation of the Late Effects of Poliomyelitis (24580.010) and 2003 Social Security Ruling for Post-Polio Sequelae, Dr. Bruno is intimately familiar with the Social Security system and disability process; not one of The Post-Polio Institute's patients has yet been denied disability.
Ask your lawyer to contact Dr. Bruno to discuss providing medical records reviews or serving as expert witnesses.

The Polio Paradox helps polio survivors reconnect with the survival skills, courage and internal resources that allowed us to survive polio and that will help to build a new life -- and maybe even a better one -- with PPS.
There have been books about the polio epidemics, the polio vaccine and "Post-Polio Syndrome."
The Polio Paradox is unique.
The Polio Paradox describes polio survivors physical and emotional battle against the poliovirus attack, as well as the medical professionals who hurt polio survivors when they were supposed to be helping.
The Polio Paradox chronicles polio survivors' Herculean struggle to become "normal" and the fear they are now experiencing as Post-Polio Sequelae -- the unexpected "sequel" to polio -- threatens to strip them of their hard won abilities and their lives of remarkable accomplishment.
The Polio Paradox is also a medical mystery and a memoir. Dr. Richard Bruno, chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force and director of The Post-Polio Institute and The International Centre for Post-Polio Education and Research, has summarized the world's medical literature on polio and PPS. In clear terms he explains the awesome power of the poliovirus, the damage it did inside polio survivors' bodies -- both obvious and hidden -- and the physical and psychological toll taken on those who contracted "The Dread Disease." He explains how damage done by the poliovirus so many years ago set the stage for new symptoms and explains what triggers PPS today by describing his 20 years of patient care experience and research on polio survivors and PPS.
Dr. Bruno also describes in detail The Post-Polio Institute program that not only helps polio survivors stop the progression of fatigue, muscle weakness and pain, but also allows them to decrease their symptoms and increase both their ability to function and their quality of life. And he addresses the greatest obstacle and most difficult challenge in dealing with PPS: the psychological scars left by the polio experience.
The Polio Paradox then goes further. It describes the nearly 70 year history of chronic fatigue outbreaks that occurred at the same time as the polio epidemics. Dr. Bruno describes the remarkable similarities between the symptoms and research findings on PPS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and fibromyalgia. And he suggests that as many as half of those who now diagnosed with chronic fatigue -- the Baby Boomers born before the discovery of the polio vaccine -- may have had a mild case of polio in childhood and have PPS today, not CFS.
The similarities between CFS and PPS are tantalizing. Dr. Bruno's work is immensely important not only to the many persons who had polio but to those with CFS as well.
Dr. David BellThe Polio Paradox provides a wiring diagram and operator's manual for the chronically fatigued body and brain. Dr. Bruno's treatment programme has amply proved its worth.
