back button    Umpiring changes from January 2002

1. Centre Pass reverting to old rules.
Centre pass must now be caught or touched wholely in the centre third. It is deemed to have been caught correctly, if the landing foot is wholely in the centre third. The other foot could then be grounded in the goal third. It is deemed invalid however, if a player lands simultaneously on both feet with one in the centre third and one in the goal third.

2. Medical bracelet can be worn.
A medical emergency bracelet can be worn, so long as it is taped.

3. Exclusion of team officals.
Team officials can be excluded from a game for inappropriate behaviour, in the same manner as players. The umpire is permitted to give a penalty to the opposing team and this can be moved up court as further punishment, as necessary.

4. Hand signals are changing.
Many of the handsignals are changing, including "taking time" and "goal scored". Refer to the new rule book for a full list.

5. Umpires cannot enter court.
Umpires are no longer permitted to enter court to gain a better view. They are only permitted to enter court to take a toss up.

6. Miscellaneous
No personal adornments permitted
No personal adornments are permitted that may endanger any players. It is up to the umpire to decide what constitutes a danger, but examples are given as : baseball caps, large hair clasps, beads in the hair.
Umpires appeal for assistance
An umpire may appeal to the other umpire for help with decisions when necessary. All umpires must now be ready for such an appeal.
Team changes
When substituting players it is no longer necessary to tell either the umpire or the opposition of the change.
Centre Passes
The umpire blowing for the centre pass has responsibility to also pull for any infringement by the centre, such as footwork or three seconds.
Coaching during injury
During injury time, coaching is permitted, but only from the designated coaching bench. Players, (except the injured player), must not leave court but are permitted to go offside during injury time.
Penalty pass
During a penalty pass the offending player is not permitted to take part in the game either physically or verbally.
