The Death Plaque (also known as the 'Dead Man's Penny') was made of bronze and measured approximately four and a half inches in diameter. In addition to this plaque or medal, families of the bereaved would also have received an illuminated scroll in full colour and a printed letter from Buckingham Palace bearing a facsimile signature of the King.

The plaques were given to every soldier and sailor who died, or was killed, in the First World War between 4th August 1914 and 30th April 1920 while serving in HM Forces. This included death by any means, including natural causes. Around 1,150,000 plaques were eventually produced. Throughout the intervening years many plaques have become seperated from their respective medals and families.

This website aims to reunite as many plaques as possible.
