Downtown (Farragut) Bars

Downtown (Farragut)
In order to preserve the view of the monuments and federal landmarks, the city of Washington has a cap on how high office buildings may be built. That's why you never see sky scrapers in DC. However, there is a downtown where most of the "large, kinda tall" office buildings are found.

The downtown area, also called Farragut, has bunches and bunches of bars ready and willing to help the office workers of DC forget their cubicle worries. Every bar in Farragut is absolutly packed after work. And most of them have good Happy Hour specials.

Downtown has several Metro stations. Farragut North, Farragut West, McPhereson Sq, and Metro Center all take you to the downtown area.

Sign of the Whale     19th & M    Thumbs Up!
Sign of the Whale is one of the best bars around to just drink and hang out. The Happy Hour crowd dissipates after dinner time, but the place never really dies. They're always having specials on their "Whale Ale" brew.    (202) 785-1110

Red Sage    Metro Center
Red Sage is one of the upper scale restaurants in town. It's a block east of the White House. The food is fantastic and you'll pay for it. What a lot of people don't know is that up stairs from the black tie dining room is a Red Sage bar. And while you won't find any bargains here, you'll find good food, good beer, and a lively crowd for prices that won't totally scare you away.    (202) 638-4444

Capital City Brewery    New York Ave
Capital City Brewery is one of DC's classics. They always have 6-8 of their own brews on tap and they change every month or so. They don't get too crazy with their recipies, but they always have one or two that is a bit "different".    (202) 628-CCBC

Lucky Bar    Connecticut Ave & M St.
Located in the old home of Planet Fred, the Lucky Bar is now going after a different crowd. With lots of TVs and tables now filling up the old dance floors, Lucky Bar is more for people looking to socialize than do the grind. Thursday is the big night here. With $1 bottles of Bud the place is packed full. The afterwork crowd is fun and friendly.    (202) 331-3733

The Rock    Gallery Place/Chinatown
The Rock is a fairly new sports bar located across from the new MCI Center in Chinatown. Since the opening of the new arena, lots of places are starting to move into that area. The Rock has three indoor levels and roof seating. Post event crowds at the arena, pack the place almost every night.    (202) 842-7625

Mad Hatter    19th & M    Thumbs Up!
The Mad Hatter is small and doesn't have much room, but they always play the best music. I'm not sure why that is since they don't even have a dance floor. Also, if you're hungry you've got to try their burgers.    (202) 833-1495

Tequila Grill
Located in the heart of the downtown Business District, Tequila Grill is known for their Thursday Happy Hours.

Tequila Grill    20th & K Street.
Tequila Grill is definatly known best for its Thursday happy hours. The combination of cheap beer and convenient locaton bring in the after work crowds.    (202) 833-3640

Mr. Day's    19th & L Street.    Thumbs Up!
Mr. Days is always a good place for meeting people. It's in the back of this alley off of 19th street between L and M. Who knows how anyone finds the place. But it's always full, and once you're there it's really fun. It's not exclusivly a dance club, but there's always great dancing. When it gets crowded the party spills out into the alley.

The Cellar    M & Connecticut
The Cellar is back, and friday nights are a great time to be there with $7 open bar from 5-7:30 pm (and the drinks are nice and strong unlike some open bars!). Thursday night is college night.    (202)785-1211

Ha' Penny Lion    K Street.
I've heard that Ha' Penney is a great place on weekends, but every time that I've been there during the week, the place clears out around 8pm. I'm going to have to try and make it there some Friday...    (202) 296-8075

Rumors    19th & M
Rumors is one of those places that took over the sidewalk and glassed it in to call their own. The place isn't too big, but they have a dance floor inside. Their sandwiches are pretty good.    (202) 466-7378
