Chief Cindy Samples
Announces Retirement
Due to health related problems, and under the advice of my cardiologist, it is imperative that I reduce my responsibilities.  After many hours of prayer, I have concluded that I must retire from my position as Principle Chief of the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama.  My official retirement date is February 24, 2008.
I am not leaving the tribe and I will not stop working for the tribe.  Upon retirement, I will assume a position on the Tribal Elders Council where my 10 years of experience and knowledge of our tribal government may be called upon by current and future leaders whenever needed.   I will also continue to work with various tribal committees as well as serve as a representative for our tribe on the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission until the end of my term in 2010.

Stan Long Assumes Principle Chief Position
When a Principle Chief leaves office before their term expires, it is the responsibility of the tribal officers and council to appoint a new Principle Chief to serve the remainder of the term.  Upon announcement of my retirement date,  the tribal officers and council held discussion and voted by majority to appoint 2nd Vice Chief, Stan Long, to assume the position of Principle Chief to become effective immediately following my retirement.
Chief Long is familiar with current tribal affairs and is honored to assume the position of Principle Chief where he will strive to continue moving the tribe forward in a good and positive way.
