The Wilmslow Green Room Society welcomes members of all ages
Adults may join as full or social members; young people
under 21 join as juniors or students. All members
receive regular copies of the Society's Newsletter with
details of forthcoming productions and social events.
Founded in 1924, we are one of the oldest Amateur
Dramatic Societies in the country. In the beginning, as
'strolling players', we performed wherever a venue could
be found. Following a superb fundraising effort in 1989
a Victorian cottage and old shirt factory were converted
into the modern theatre you see today. The WRGS
operates as an amateur dramatic society and as a
theatre.
Join our Society and get involved in the
life of the theatre!
The Society stages five regular in-house productions
each season with an open-air Shakespearean production
at Gawsworth Hall in June
We welcome members of all ages
You can join as a Full or Social member
There are reduced membership rates for young
members, and for youngsters involved in the Saturday
Drama Groups
All members are entitled to concessionary ticket prices,
and everyone is welcome to join all social events.
Full membership (including students and juniors) allows
you to become involved with every aspect of theatre life
and productions. This could include backstage, wardrobe,
properties, stage management, acting, directing, sound,
lighting, set design and social events.
Social membership entitles you to join in with regular
events run by the WGRS' Social Committee; members
organise social events throughout the year all of which are
publicised in the Newsletter and on the notice board at the
Green Room. Plus you can be involved with set construction,
wardrobe, coffee and bar duties, befriending new members
and front of house duties.
We offer you a friendly welcome!
Why not get involved?
You don't have to be an expert! With hundreds of jobs involved
in running a Society, theatre and season of plays there are
opportunities front of house and backstage to act or help with
productions, and to support the very practical tasks undertaken.
If you feel ready for some fun, want to make new friends and
are not averse to the occasional challenge then this could be
the place for you.
Committees ensure the smooth running of the Society,
overseeing finances, policies and membership, and organising
the Season's five productions.
The Theatre Management Committee is responsible for the
building and its maintenance, general housekeeping and
security, and for organising the Bar on a rota basis.
The Play and Stage committee help with the selection of
plays and Directors are chosen to direct operations. They work
with actors, stage managers,
stage crews, wardrobe and
props to turn a script into a
staged play. Stage Managers
and assistants organise the building of sets and oversee backstage seating arrangements,
observing safety and fire regulations, and liaising closely with technical and front of house members. House Managers are
made aware of safety issues for the protection of the
audience, and act as hosts for productions.
The Social Committee devises the Season's social events
organising rotas for volunteers to help during productions
and members are encouraged to help with coffee and bar
duties. Members can look forward to theatre trips, car
treasure hunts and even an occasional duck race! The annual
Christmas Brass Band is a perennial favourite. Committees
work continually throughout the year and help is welcomed
with all the above.
Members involved with Publicity promote awareness of the
Society and its five regular productions, developing links with
the media and producing promotional materials. Plus the
Committee produces a regular Newsletter, distributed to all
members.
Involvement in any aspect is the best way to get to know
people and become an active member of the Wilmslow Green
Room Society. Enthusiasm and commitment and a certain
amount of time are all that's required and in return you'll find
us a friendly and welcoming society. Help is welcomed at all
levels including the delivery of Newsletters and leaflets, coffee
and bar duties and cleaning up.
The Society is a member of the Greater Manchester Drama
Federation, (GMDF), and the Little Theatre Guild (LTG).
The LTG was formed in 1946 and has expanded to 100
member theatres throughout the UK. Workshops are
organised during the year, actively supported by WGRS'
members.
