Match report

Cliffe Woods Colts vs Black Lion Under 8 - League Cup 12th November

Colts went out of the cup, going down 4 – 0 on aggregate to highflying Black Lion.

Match 1:

The damage was done in the 1st half of Match 1. Following a minute silence to mark Remembrance Day both sides started a little tentatively, but it wasn’t long before Black Lion began to get the upper hand. Colts battled hard. Regan Smith put in some crunching tackles in defence & both Dominic Brennan & Jacob Redding forced saves from the Black Lion keeper, but they still couldn’t prevent Black Lion taking a 4 – 0 halftime lead.

Colts continued to fight hard in the 2nd half. Henri Jones made some good saves and Regan & Reece Darke were strong at the back. Connor Clarke & Billy McGee both came on as substitutes and although Black Lion had most of the pressure Colts held them at bay to give themselves a glimmer of hope in Match 2.

Player of the Match: Regan Smith

Match 2:

Match 2 was a hard fought affair. Colts started well and edged the opening exchanges although there was very little to choose between the 2 sides. Neither side was able to create a clear-cut chance & the first half finished goalless.

The 2nd half continued in the same vein. All the Colts players put in excellent performances. Toby Bell was assured in goal; Ben Brennan & Liam Druggen were solid at the back; Grady Lee & George Greenway worked hard in midfield and Connor Jeffrey caused problems up front. Natasha Munday replaced George as Colts dominated the last 5 minutes, but couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock: the match finishing a 0 – 0 draw.

Player of the Match: Liam Druggen

Under 8`s

Game 1 – Swallows 5 – 1 Cliffe Woods Colts

Game 2 – Swallows 2 – 2 Cliffe Woods Colts

Maybe it was Halloween, maybe it was the clocks going back – whatever it was Colts weren’t at the party in match 1. They started brightly enough & took the lead through a GRADY LEE strike, but that was as good as it got. Colts had no answer to Swallows slick passing & but for the heroics of TOBY BELL in goal the 5-1 score line could have been much worse.

Match 2 was a closer fought affair. Colts took a first half lead courtesy of a JACOB REDDING free kick. Swallows came back into the game after the break, scoring twice to take the lead. With time running out JACOB REDDING hit a real beauty of a shot into the top corner to earn Colts a share of the points with his second of the match.

Game 2 – Cliffe Woods Colts 2 – 0 Rainham Kenilworth Rovers

2nd October 2005

Cliffe Woods Colts v Rainham Kenilworth Rovers (Under 8)

Match 1

Although Colts went down 3-1, the scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game.

The first half was pretty even. Toby Bell made some excellent saves and both Connor Jeffrey & Natasha Munday were denied by the Rovers keeper. Reece Darke looked solid at the back & George Greenway put in some crunching tackles, which is why it was something of a surprise when Rovers took the lead. A harsh penalty decision gave Rovers the chance to double their advantage, but justice was done as the kick hit the bar & Toby tidied up the rebound. Colts pushed forward looking for an equaliser which duly came as Dominic Brennan finished off a mazy run by tucking the ball under the advancing keeper. Unfortunately, Colts’ celebrations were short lived as they lost concentration for a minute allowing Rovers to regain the lead almost immediately and go in at half time 2-1 up.

The 2nd half was a different story. With the slope in their favour Colts pressed hard for their 2nd equaliser. The first 5 minutes of the 2nd half was played almost entirely in the Rovers half, but Colts couldn’t make the pressure tell and Rovers broke away to score against the run of play. Undaunted Colts went back on the attack. They laid siege to the Rovers goal & created plenty of chances. Connor & Dominic both had shots saved, Natasha hit the post, but they just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net and the final whistle went with Rovers hanging on to a flattering scoreline.

Player of the Match: Connor Jeffrey

Match 2

Colts picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 victory in match 2.

Colts started well with Jacob Redding controlling the midfield & Ben Brennan mopping up any rare Rovers attacks. They deservedly took the lead when Jacob’s shot was deflected in at the near post following a great run down the right wing. Rovers began to get into the game and could have equalised, but Henri Jones dived bravely at the striker’s feet to deny them. Reece Treserden came on for Ryan Cowan & the game continued to ebb & flow before Rovers equalised with a low skidding shot that deceived Henri. Jacob continued making driving runs at the heart of the Rovers defence & both Billy McGee & Ben Brennan were denied by the keeper as Colts strove to restore their advantage.

The 2nd half continued in the same pattern & early Colts pressure saw Rovers penned in. A tactical switch saw Regan Smith & Ben switch positions so that Ben could push forward. The change soon paid dividends. Billy made a powerful run into the box & played the ball square to Ben who made no mistake putting Colts 2-1 up. Rovers rallied & put Colts under pressure but thanks to some excellent defending from Regan couldn’t force an equalizer. Ryan came back on for Reece & Colts hung on for the win.
