A United Church of Christ congregation

mandated for social justice

What’s new ?!

Current CfR members have enjoyed a rich life together in a Christian church that could freely combine a witness to social justice, scripture and community.  The design of the church has always respected the authenticity of members’ beliefs: faith and/or conscience.  Also, CfR was formed with a design that has given us freedom to experiment and be creative as we approach our life together and as we struggle to bring about greater justice in the world.  We have wanted to pass on these opportunities to others for many years.

What is the Congregation for Reconciliation?

Mission Statement

The Congregation for Reconciliation is a community of faith-based and conscience-based people.  We value social justice, diversity, community, mutual support, authenticity and celebration/worship.  We respect individual human rights.  We work together for social, economic, political, and environmental justice.  We identify and counter systemic injustice through research, study, action, and reflection. (2007)

Some History

The Congregation for Reconciliation (CfR) is a small United Church of Christ church in Dayton, Ohio.  It was formed in 1968 in response to the civil rights movement and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.

Mandated to work for social justice as the cornerstone of life in the church, the congregation does not own a building but rents meeting space when necessary.  Not having the costs of a building makes the Congregation free to address the social justice issues of our times.  For the most part, members are located in Montgomery County.  CfR is a Just Peace and Open and Affirming church.

Wilma Righter, 1512 Cory Drive, Dayton.  Mayor McLin, City Commissioners:  I am the Moderator of the Congregation for Reconciliation, a Just Peace and Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ.  I have come to express support for passage of the ordinance that opposes employment discrimination that is aimed at people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Federal Civil Service system has had non-discrimination for GLBT people since the Clinton administration.

Dayton is a city that prizes fairness and justice.  This legislation is in keeping with those values.  Thank you for bringing this ordinance to a vote.  Please pass it tonight.
