How are these etchings created?

Barbara Reider creates her "Fantasy Fish" and other critters using the newly developed technique of Clay Relief Etching.

Clay Relief Etching was developed by a local Connecticut artist less than 20 years ago. This technique combines sculpture, printmaking, and oil painting. A low relief sculpture is created from a clay slab, which is then baked to stabilize the plate. The plate may be inked and/or painted using oil paints. The plate is then put through an intaglio-style press to produce the print. Each inking and painting produces a single unique and original piece of artwork.

Ms. Reider grew up on a sand bar island, and now lives in Connecticut. Ms. Reider is a windsurfer and scuba diver who dreams of the ocean when she is not actually in the water.
