PACE Do it Yourself Clinic (Back
to Top)
Come one, come all
to the 2008 PACE Do-It-Yourself clinic at Lancaster Toyota Mazda. This is on Friday
3-7-08, at 7:00pm. The evening will be broken down into 3 parts. The part
starting at 7:00 will be a guided tour of the LTM parts department. If you have
ever wondered what goes on behind the counter, here is your chance to find out!
Joe will give us a tour thru the parts department and show us how they look up,
order, receive, and store the parts. He will explain the process, and show us
the Mazda web pages they use for researching the parts we need.
After this is done
the second part will be a 2 minute walk over to the Mazda new car dealership to
see what is new for 2008. Brian Rohrer
will do a question and answer session for us and show off the new 2008 Mazdas.
The last part will
be a stop at the Lyndon Diner for FOOD! All good PACE events must have food
included somehow, so we will drive the short distance to the diner for a treat
of your choice.
Please park in the
back of the Burger King Parking Lot, as this is right between the parts
department and the Mazda new car showroom. Please be there a little early so we
can assemble IN the parts department by 7:00 sharp.
I need to
know by February 19th if you will be attending so I can make arrangements at
the Lyndon Diner. Please call (392-0756) or send an e-mail to me (wjlatsha@ptd.net) by
2-19-08 if you will be there. Or if you can make it at the last minute, just
show up!

Kickoff
Dinner (Back to Top)
Bob & Sue
Gresh are once again kicking off the topdown season with a
chance to get together, dine and catch up after our long winter lull. We had a
great time there last year, so put this on your calendar and don't miss it!
The 2008 Kick-Off Dinner will be held on
Saturday, March 22 at Flavers Food & Spirits, 45 North Market Street, Elizabethtown,
PA at 6:00 p.m.
We will be ordering off a slightly limited
menu but with a good selection from full dinners to sandwiches, burgers, and
soups and salads. The club will again this year be purchasing appetizers to get
our dinner started off just right.
We will have a private room, so we can make
as much noise as we want!! There will be good food, door prizes, and good
fellowship with fellow Miata enthusiasts--a perfect way to get our 2007 season
underway. Check out Flavers.net for more info.
Please e-mail (rgresh@ptd.net) or call
Bob/Sue Gresh by Saturday, March 15,
if you are planning to attend so
we can let the restaurant know if we need the small room or the large room. Let's
fill up the big room!! It can hold up to 70 people. Please call or e-mail us if
you have any questions.

Chesapeake Bay Day (Back to Top)
Take a leisurely
drive to the Eastern Shore of Maryland along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. We will be leaving the Turkey Hill in Quarryville
(near the Buck) at 8:30 AM on Saturday May 17th. Please try to arrive around
8:15 for a short drivers meeting. If you're coming from Lancaster take Rt. 272 South to the Turkey
Hill near the intersection of Rt. 372. Contact Jerry and Lynne Long (lynneelong@aol.com) if you'd like to caravan from Lancaster to Quarreyville. From York take Rt. 74 to Rt
372 to Rt 272. Contact Bill Anderson (anderson219@comcast.net)
if you'd like to caravan from the York
area to Quarreyville. We will meet Miata groups from the Big Apple Miata Club
of New York/Long Island and the Miata Owners of DelMarVa (MOOD) around 11AM in
St. Michaels. We will either have a sit-down lunch or take a walking tour of
St. Michaels depending on your preference. There are places to grab a quick
lunch along the walking tour. After the tour we will then caravan to Tilghman Island. Tilghman is a very picturesque
town claiming home port to the only
remaining skip jack fishing fleet. We will have some time to explore the area
before we depart for home with an estimated return time of around 6PM. If you
enjoy getting out on the open road with your fellow Miata owners this is the
drive for you. Find out more about St. Michaels and the surrounding area at http://www.baydreaming.com/stmichaels.htm.
Contact Bill Anderson at 717-741-4732 or anderson219@comcast.net as soon as
possible so you won't be left behind.
Conestoga
Mini-Train Run (Back to Top)
Jack and Gloria
Higdon will be leading a not to be missed Conestoga mini-train run and picnic
on June 1. We will meet at Wendy's on Prospect
Rd. south off Rt. 30 at 11:00 am, leaving at 11:15
am. Route 30 will be congested with only one lane in each direction so you
might want to give extra time for that. The run will take us thru beautiful
winding country roads, two covered bridges and to the private home of Tom and
Gerry Grassel. The train ride starts in their front yard and runs thru a wooded
area over a hand built bridge and tunnel taking aprox. 10 to 15 minutes. There
is a $5.00 per car cost and it will be donated to the Conestoga Volunteer
Fire Dept. This is a one of a kind experience offered to us by a train and
memorabilia collector so you may wish to bring your camera. I will collect the
money at Wendy's. After the ride we will continue on to Muddy Run Park. Bring your own picnic lunch or if
you prefer there is a snack bar selling hamburgers, hotdogs, soft ice cream etc.
Prettyboy State Park (Back to Top)
Please meet at
the Kendig Square
Shopping Center just at the northern
edge of Willow Street, PA, on June 7th, 2008. Please group-up in
the parking area to the south side of the Taco Bell. Meet in the area between
Taco Bell and K-Mart, close to the Taco bell.
This drive will leave the Kendig Square
Shopping Center at 10:00
am sharp on Saturday morning, 6-7-08. The drive will head into Maryland, and circumnavigate the Prettyboy Reservoir, in
the Prettyboy State Park. There are lots of winding
roads, and interesting scenery in the park. We will have a lunch stop around
Noon at “The Friendly Farm”, family Style Restaurant. This is a family style
restaurant with a twist. You order the meat entrée you want, and the price is
based on what you order. Then we all pass around and share the vegetables and
trimmings that go with it. Prices are from $14.95 and do go higher for the
deluxe entrée. Here is a link to the restaurant for your info: http://friendlyfarm.net/
The return drive will stop at the “Brown Cow”
Ice Cream shop just south of Red Lion PA (York County)
for ice cream or just a break. Then we will head north thru some more winding
roads and end up at the route 30 on-ramp at Wrightsville. You may leave the
group and head home anytime from there.
We will cover just over 100 miles, and
anticipate getting to the end around 4:00. There is about 4-5 hours of driving
time, with an hour for lunch, and several rest stops.
Please note, I need a count of how many will
go on the drive by June 1st so I can call ahead and let the restaurant know how
many to save room for. There are several large trees behind the restaurant in
the parking lot if you prefer to bring a lunch, but there are no picnic tables
or shelter if the weather is questionable
Please contact me as we get closer if you
have any questions, and let me know by 6-1-08 if you are going (so I can notify
the restaurant). 717-392-0756, or wjlatsha@ptd.net.
Ladies Driving Topless
II (Back to Top)
Nina
Slenker will lead the second annual ‘Ladies Driving Topless’ on Saturday June
14th. This year’s drive will take you through Southern York County
with stops for shopping and eating. More details will follow.
East Broad
Top Railroad Drive (Back to Top)
Take a trip back to the early 1900's when
steam ruled the rails. Hear the whistles blow as the train makes its way down
the track where coal was once king. With its truly unique shop complex, nearly
100-year-old station, and early 20th century motive power, the East Broad Top
Railroad is a must-see for any railroad enthusiast. Founded in 1856, East Broad
Top began as one of many narrow gauge railways carrying lumber, ore, coal, and passengers.
Old number 12 puffed and snorted between Mount
Union and Woodvale for several
decades, but by 1956, the EBT was the last operating narrow gauge steam line
east of the Mississippi.
The railroad was forced to shut down that same year due to slumping coal demand
and competition from roadways.
We'll be leaving the Burger King on Cameron St in Harrisburg (just south of the Farm Show Building) at 8:15 am for a scenic drive
to the railroad, getting there in time for the 11:00 train. The train ride will
take about an hour. We had thought of picnicking at the end of the line and
picking up the next train back, but since the next train wouldn't arrive at the
picnic area until 1:30 we figured 2 hours would be a little long for downing a
sandwich or two. So we'll come back on the same train. After a little time to
check out the train yard, we'll take off for the ride home by a different
route. A little way into the ride, we'll stop at a state park picnic area for a
buy-your-own lunch then on to an ice cream stop.
Tropical
Treat Drive
Garry Lookingbill will again be leading us on
a drive through northern York
County and of course
we'll be stopping to eat along the way.
This trip will leave the Burger King in Columbia at 11 am sharp
on Saturday, July 12 so plan to be there a little early. This BK is just off
route 30 at Columbia
on the south side of route 30. If you're coming east on route 30 from York County,
take the first exit after the river. Coming from Lancaster County,
it's the last exit before the river. It's well marked and you'll be able to see
the BK after you exit.
The first part of the drive should take about
two hours and we'll stop for a late lunch at the Tropical Treat Restaurant.
Then we'll take about an hour drive back to the York area where we'll stop for ice cream
before breaking up for the day.
The drive will end at the ice cream stop
which is close to route 30 so it's convenient to wherever you need to go.
So put this date on your calendar and join us
for some fun roads that you probably haven't been on before.
Questions? Contact Garry at zoom47zoom@embarqmail.com.
Wellsboro
Weekend with Lehigh
Valley Club (Back to Top)
Mark Burke from the Lehigh Valley Miata
Owners Club is going to do the popular Wellsboro weekend again. Cool! Those of
you who've been on previous Wellsboro trips know what a beautiful area it is.
The town of Wellsboro is quaint and quiet. It will remind
you of the swww.wellsboroweb.com/wwdirectory/lodging.shtmlmall
town you grew up in.
Accommodations are at the Penn Wells Hotel or
Lodge in the heart of town 1-800-545-2446. The Lodge is the recommended first choice.
Try for other motel options in the area.
PACE will be leaving Saturday morning, July
19 at 8:00 am sharp from the Sheetz at the intersection of Rte 501 and Newport Road
approximately a mile north of Lititz. We will take about three hours to drive
over scenic roads to Indian
Park in Montoursville
where we'll meet LVMOC. Mark will then lead a caravan to Murray Mazda where we'll be treated to
lunch. This will be year 3 of this event sponsored by Murray Mazda. At
last year's event we were greeted by the Mazda regional representative as well
as presented with numerous door prizes - no one left empty handed.
After lunch, Mark will lead us over back
roads to Wellsboro. For those who have joined us for the last two years, Saturday's route
will be all new for 2008. Saturday dinner plans are in the works. And
there will be an evening ride after dinner - last years was wonderful, cool and
scenic.
Sunday morning, after a good breakfast--you may want to try
the famous Wellsboro Diner, we'll head out for a drive to the Grand Canyon of
Pennsylvania, just a few miles out of town. After a picnic lunch at the Grand Canyon we'll make our way back to PACE territory.
Those who can't make it for the entire
weekend are free to make the drive up with us as far as you'd like and leave
for home when you have to.
If the start point north of Lititz is not
good for you, you can join us along the way or at the park in Montoursville. If
you are meeting us at Montoursville, be there by 11:00 at the latest. Contact
Jerry Long (contact info below) and he can arrange a meet.
This will be a great weekend and we'd love to
have you join us. For more info go to the Lehigh Valley
club site, http://www.lvmoc.net, and click on Event Calendar. Info is also on
the forum. Just click on 'Forum' then 'Upcoming Rides and Events' then 'PA
Grand Canyon Adventure' (information will be posted in late spring of
2008).
Kauffman BBQ Drive (Back to Top)
We will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the Turkey
Hill in Denver, PA on Rt. 272 (the same place we met for the
Texter Mountain Run and Picnic two summers ago). We will also have
another meet-up point on Rt. 422 in Robesonia at Murdough's Christmas Barn for
those in the Reading area and those coming west
from the Harrisburg
area. From Murdough's we will travel to Kauffman's Bar-B-Que
Restaurant in Bethel, PA. Kauffman's has great food at
inexpensive prices. After we eat we will have the first-ever PACE
Miniature Golf Tournament right on the property. Whoever wins the golf
tournament gets to treat all the others to ice cream, also conveniently located
at Kauffman's!! This day will be approximately one-third driving,
one-third eating, and one-third golfing! So if you're not into the longer
rides the club takes, this one just might be for you.
New Hampshire Covered
Bridge Tour (Back to Top)
On Saturday, August 2th the M’sters
Miata Club of Manchester, NH
has been invited PACE to join them on a tour of some of their area’s
covered bridges. This is the 3rd annual ‘Dis-Covered Bridge Tour’
held by the M’sters and if last years tour is any indication this one should be
terrific. The event focuses on covered bridges, some dating back to the 1700s.
Of course, as with any Miata drive, there will be food and ice cream involved
as well. The plan is to make this a long weekend leaving the Lancaster
area early on Friday morning August 1st driving to Manchester NH,
about a 10 hour ride including breaks. We will stay in Manchester Friday and Saturday nights. On
Saturday we will accompany the M’sters on their drive. Sunday we will leave our
hotel and drive north to the Kancumagus
Highway, a famous byway running through the White
Mountains of Northern New Hampshire. We
will then follow scenic secondary roads into Vermont
and travel along Route 108 through Smuggler’s Notch into Stowe, Vermont
where we will overnight. Stowe is famous for its many ski slopes and lodges
most notably the Von Trapp Lodge of Sound of Music fame. We will have some time
to explore the Stowe area on Sunday afternoon. Finally, we head home on Monday
following scenic Route 100 towards southern Vermont
into New York and onto Pennsylvania. If you are interested in
joining us on our long New England weekend,
please contact Bill Anderson at 717-741-4732 or anderson219@comcast.net. August is
vacation time so we will have to plan ahead - get back to Bill as soon as
possible to let him know if you want to come along.
Seafood
Festival, Havre de Grace MD (Back to Top)
On Saturday, August 9th we will
once again be traveling to the Seafood Festival in beautiful Havre de Grace, Maryland.
This will be our 3rd year for this drive, which winds through some of the best
Miata roads in southern Lancaster County and northern Maryland. Our previous run boasted about 25
Miatas and we would love to see more this year.
We'll depart from Burger King at the
intersections of Millersville Pike & Charles Rd. (next to the Manor Shopping
Center) at 12:00. Travel time is a little over 2
hours, which includes a rest stop at Susquehannock
State Park (the new
restrooms are now open!). There are plenty of great twists & turns for some
challenging driving, not to mention some terrific views of the Susquehanna and
surrounding hills.
Once in Havre De Grace we'll visit the 28th
Annual Seafood Festival held at Tydings
Park on the Chesapeake
Bay. The festival features art and craft vendors, great food,
beer, entertainment and more. Don't worry if you're not a seafood lover, there
is plenty of the usual festival fare as well. The return trip is on your own,
but I'm sure a number of us will want to extend our day by visiting a
restaurant or patio along the water. Havre de Grace offers some fine
restaurants, pubs and ice cream parlors not to mention numerous Antique shops.
Directions to Burger King: From Rt. 30 take
the exit for Rt. 741 (Rohrerstown
Rd.) and travel south approx. 3.5 miles. (The name
of the road will change to Millersville
Rd. south of Rt. 462). At the intersection of Rt.
999 (Millersville Pike) turn left and travel east for approx. 1.4 miles. Burger
King will be on your right. We plan to leave promptly at noon, so arrive early
to grab a bite to eat or drink and socialize. We'll have plenty of direction
sheets and the festival can accommodate any number of us, so feel free to just
show up. Check the Yahoo group if the weather is questionable.
PACE Picnic
at the Higdon’s (Back to Top)
Jack and Gloria Higdon will be hosting the
annual PACE picnic this year. If you like lots of food and some great
fellowship make sure to reserve Saturday, August 23rd on your calendar. The
directions to the Higdon’s are as follows: Members that have been to our home
may park in the front driveway. All others will find plenty of parking behind
our house. From route 30 take the Fruitville Pike exit. At first traffic light,
turn left onto Fruitville Pike North. Travel about seven miles and turn right
on Fairland Rd.
then take the first left onto South
Cophill Rd., and drive to the dead end. We are the
last driveway on the right. You can park in the gravel driveway or on the
street.
Hawk Mountain Drive (Back to Top)
Check back later for a drive description and
directions.

who will enjoy looking at our cars, there will be games, crafts, food, musical
entertainment, and helicopter rides.
Several other car clubs will also be showing
their cars. Antique cars, classic cars, corvettes, street rods, motorcycles and
trucks will be entered. All contestants will receive a participation award

Susquehanna
River Drive (Back to Top)
Join Bill and Janet
Anderson on Saturday October 11th for a casual drive that will meander through
the back roads of Lancaster and York counties following along the banks of the Susquehanna River. We will stop at a scenic river
overlook, the Brown Cow Dairy (where we will enjoy home-made Ice Cream), and Sam Lewis
State Park. This drive
was originally run during Buggies and Bridges and received good reviews.
This will be an afternoon trip leaving about
1PM from the Turkey Hill location at 1199
Prospect Road, Columbia, PA. We will end the drive at Sam Lewis
State Park some time
before 5PM. Let’s plan on meeting around 12:45 for direction sheet
distribution.
Drop us a line at anderson219@comcast.net if you have questions
or to let us know if you plan on joining the drive, that way we will have
plenty of direction sheets. As always just show up if you get a last minute
urge to put the top down and take a drive.
Directions to Turkey Hill: Take the Prospect Road exit
off Rt. 30 in Columbia.
If you are traveling East on Rt 30, turn right onto Prospect Road. The Turkey Hill station is
on the right at the intersection of Prospect
Road and Columbia
Ave (Rt. 462).
Shady Maple Harvest Drive(In
Reverse) (Back to Top)
This year we will
be starting the Shady Maple
Harvest Drive “AT” the Shady Maple restaurant. If
you want to eat lunch with us, please be there by 11:00am. Park in the “upper”
parking lot to the left side of the building (when facing it), and meet at the
main front doors. We will eat in the restaurant, and do the drive
afterwards.
The plan is to
start the drive by 1:00pm. If you do not want to eat at the restaurant, please
be at the upper parking lot by 12:45 so we can leave by 1:00pm.
We will drive our
route in reverse order from last year. This is about a 2 hour drive, and we
will wind thru the open countryside, and thru wooded areas around the Middle
Creek Wildlife refuge. We will end up on the east side of Lancaster
(East Petersburg), near Route 283. And I am
working on a surprise ending for the drive.
Please contact me
as we get closer if you have any questions, and stay tuned for more details on
this surprise! 717-392-0756, or wjlatsha@ptd.net
