State Conventions
are coming!
Call Us!

Each year, representatives from the Voluntary Benefits Plan attend numerous State APWU Conventions. Why? So that we can provide on-the-spot, first-hand information to your convention delegates. You can get the most recent up-dates about the current benefit programs as well as future plans. Unfortunately, we can't attend all the conventions.

If you are planning on attending a State convention and would like information made available to your delegates, pick up a telephone, write a letter or even e-mail us! We can send materials and even some promotional give-aways for you to hand out. Educate your members about the benefits available to them... The income they save may be their own! Don't delay, do it today!

Organizing Efforts A Success!

The recent organizing efforts made in the private sector trucking companies have been a great victory for the APWU and for all APWU members. Over the past several months, we have received numerous phone calls at the Voluntary Benefits Plan from individuals wanting to know whether these new members will be eligible to enroll in any of the benefit programs. The answer is "YES!"

We have already made all benefit programs with the exception of the Short Term and Long Term Disability Income programs available to the new members. We continue to discuss with the insurance companies on whether we can make the disability plans available, as well. We will keep you up-dated on our progress.

One note... since these new members are not paid from one pay source as are all postal employees, payroll deduction for the benefit premiums will not be available. Those members wishing to enroll in benefits will either receive regular bills via the U.S.Mail, or may opt to pay through Electronic Fund Transfer from their checking account (an option currently available to retirees).

If you are currently trying to organize other trucking or private sector employees, contact our office for materials on the benefits that are available only to APWU Members!

Simply the best benefits!

The Voluntary Benefits Plan (VBP) provides a great variety of benefit programs to members of the American Postal Workers Union. Here is a list of the programs available, along with a brief description of the benefits provided. If you wish to receive more information about any of these benefit plans, or applications for yourself or others in your local, we urge you to contact the VBP by calling, writing or by sending an e-mail.

BENEFITS HELPING APWU MEMBERS IN TIMES OF NEED

Members of the American Postal Workers Union have now received over $70 Million in benefits through the Voluntary Benefits Plan and these first class insurance programs. Many of those members have written to tell their story and to say thanks to the union and the Voluntary Benefits Plan for having programs like these when they needed them. To protect the member’s privacy, only their initials are used here. Many letters like these have been received. Here are just a few samples...

“This is one benefit that each and every member can’t do without. One never knows what’s in store for you from one day to the next. If you become disabled and can’t perform your job, you still have peace of mind. Bravo APWU.” J.F., Palisades Park, NJ

“Due to an auto accident which temporarily disabled me from work, the benefit payments received from the Short Term Disability plan and the Hospital Cash plan really helped to pay the bills. Thanks for being there.” F.M., Markham, IL

“VBP is the best investment I ever made to protect myself. I am now retired from the Postal Service with a sudden illness that has changed my life. Thank God I’ve had no financial problems on top of my illness. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, VBP!” L.I., Staten Island, NY

APWU Mortgage Origination Program
Because of an ongoing labor dispute between Oregon Steel and the United Steel Workers of America and in consideration of the relationship between Oregon Steel and Wells Fargo Bank, which is owned by Norwest Bank, the provider of the APWU Home Mortgage Program, the APWU Mortgage Program is not being promoted at this time. Please check with our office periodically for an update on this matter. We hope for a prompt and fair resolution to this dispute so that we may again offer this excellent mortgage program to APWU members.

A Note To All APWU Members And Locals

These benefits are for MEMBERS-ONLY. They make excellent organizing tools. Don’t hesitate to use them for that purpose.

While most of these benefit plans have remained at the same low cost since the beginning of the program in 1987, they are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information regarding the programs, please have your members and prospective members contact the Voluntary Benefits Plan staff for specific plan questions.

If you are planning orientations for new hires or organizing drives for new members, let the Voluntary Benefits Plan know. Local officers may request that a supply of plan brochures be sent to them by calling the appropriate phone number listed below. And the Voluntary Benefits Plan will work with you in developing materials to be mailed to your members or non-members. Give us a call and use the benefits to help you grow your union!
