Measurement

The Commonwealth uses Imperial units, both in everyday use as well as in the military, science, and medicine.

The main unit of length is the foot of 12 inches. Three feet make up a yard. Longer distances are in miles of 5,280 feet. One-eighth of a mile is a furlong, although this unit is generally only used in horse racing and land records. 40 rods, another unit used sometimes in measuring land, make up a furlong.

Mass is in pounds of 16 ounces, not to be confused with the pound as a unit of currency. Some areas use a measure called the stone, which is 14 pounds. 100 pounds make up a hundredweight, and 20 hundredweight (2000 pounds) are a ton. There is also a troy pound, which has 12 troy ounces and is used only for precious metals, jewelry, and pharmaceuticals. The troy pound is also divided into 240 pennyweight (dwt), or 20 pennyweight per troy ounce.

Area is in square feet for smaller items or, with land, acres. One acre is an area one furlong in length and 4 rods wide, or 43,560 square feet. This is equal to 640 acres in a square mile.

Volume is measured in gallons. One gallon equals 4 quarts or 8 pints, or a smaller liquid measure of 128 fluid ounces. Dry goods are measured with a slightly larger gallon, with a corresponding increase in the size of the quart and pint. Larger dry measures are the peck (2 gallons) and the bushel (8 gallons or 4 pecks).

Time has seconds, minutes, hours, days, and years, however, the second on L'nhraei is slightly longer than the standard metric second due to the different day lengths of Terra and L'nhraei.

Electrical current is an exception, using metric amperes, volts, and watts. The voltage in most areas is 110 volts, 60 hertz.

Temperature is in degrees Fahrenheit. Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F. The Rankine scale is often used for scientific purposes. 0°Ra is absolute zero, and the degrees are the same size as Fahrenheit degrees.
