§ 507. Cruelty to Animals.
1. No person shall be convicted of cruelty to animals in the first degree unless it can be proven that he intentionally or recklessly caused serious bodily harm or death to any animal which was the pet of another person, without consent of the owner.
2. No person shall be convicted of cruelty to animals in the second degree unless it can be proven that he intentionally or recklessly caused serious bodily harm or death to any animal of which he has custody.
3. No person shall be convicted of cruelty to animals in the third degree unless it can be proven that he intentionally caused serious bodily harm or death to any animal of which he does not have custody.
4. It shall be a defence that the animal was harmed or killed by generally accepted veterinary practices, scientific research, for use of one or more of the animal's body parts, for religious purposes, or while hunting.
5. Cruelty to animals in the first degree shall be punished by a term of not more than one year imprisonment and damages of not more than £2,000.
6. Cruelty to animals in the second degree shall be punished by a term of not more than six months imprisonment and damages of not more than £1,000.
7. Cruelty to animals in the third degree shall be punished by a term of not more than three months imprisonment and damages of not more than £500.
