Reydovan Republic Requests to Join Commonwealth
CH'TAALA, L'NHRAEI (LNN) Chancellor Joshua Underwood and Ambassador Jeremiah Neill of the Reydovan Republic met with President Macpherson and Ambassador Natasha Stuart to discuss the Republic becoming part of the Commonwealth. The 12 systems of the Republic would become member worlds.
During the discussions, Chancellor Underwood and Ambassador Neill said the people of the Republic had authorised them to make whatever decisions might be necessary. They both agreed that, if Parliament approves admission of the Republic systems, that they will abide by the Commonwealth constitution. All current laws of the Republic in conflict with the constitution would be null and void.
The Republic recently ended a civil war with its former government, the Reydovan Empire. Chancellor Underwood said the desire to prevent another war was why he sought admission to the Commonwealth. The current Reydovan military would become part of the Defence Force, under the control of Parliament during peacetime and the President of the Commonwealth during war.
Chancellor Underwood would remain in power over the 12 Reydovan systems, by request of the Reydovan people. The current governments of those worlds will remain in place, although some changes to the court system would be made to comply with the Guarantee of Rights. There would also be Commonwealth district and circuit courts created for the new member worlds, although those details are still undecided.
The Reydovan mark would be replaced with the Commonwealth pound. At what rate is undetermined. The pound is currently worth 66.8737 marks, or 3d 5ø to one mark.
President Macpherson will present this matter to Parliament when they re-convene in Messidor, after the elections, and Chancellor Underwood will address them.
