IAP Admits Parthian Republic as Observer
by Cheryl Robertson
STARBASE TRANQUILITY (LIS) The Council of the Intergalactic Alliance of Planets voted to admit the Parthian Republic as an observation, despite fierce objections from Ambassador Hurin of the Parthian Imperium.
All ambassadors present, including Natasha Stuart of the Commonwealth, voted in favour of the admission. Most of them also stated their recognition of the Parthian Republic as a legitimate government.
The Commonwealth, however, has not yet done so. Secretary of State Mirok tr'Riuhvei said, "The Commonwealth does not take sides in other nations' wars. The recent events in Yoltorian space have shown all too clearly what can happen."
Two Alliance of Incorporated Worlds vessels were attacked in Yoltorian space last week, one being completely destroyed. They were sent to help after repeated attacks on Yoltorian ships by Grotian Industries who claimed the Yoltorian Authority stole technology from them. The Authority denies this.
Ambassador Stuart, when asked about her vote to admit the Parthian Republic, replied, "We believe in the right of people to govern themselves. Whether the Imperium or the Republic or both - is that government, both of them should be allowed to interact with representatives of other nations. Perhaps the Council can help negotiate peace between them."
"It will be up to Parliament to decide which government, or perhaps neither or both, that the Commonwealth shall recognise. Whichever it is, it should be the one supported by the Parthian people."
