WELLS LOCAL HISTORY GROUP...
was set up in October 1996. The Group's activities are twofold:
1. Monthly meetings, with Speakers.
2. The collection of historical material connected with Wells -next-the-Sea and the surrounding area.
A Newsletter is distributed to members several times a year.
The Meetings.
These are arranged for the first Wednesday of each month from October to May and are held at 7.30 p.m. in the Maltings Community Centre, Staithe Street, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk.
[visits to special places of interest may be arranged in the Summer break.]
Speakers are chosen from a wide range of professional and personal interests, some of them local residents, and in the past these have provided some very stimulating talks. Meetings have been well-attended by our members [who now number in the region of 140], together with their guests and other visitors to the town.
Collection of historical material with regard to Wells-next-the-Sea.
Our long-term intention is to collect artefacts, memorabilia and records which we hope, eventually, to put on permanent display. So far, four Special Interest groups have been set up, whose aims are as follows:
- The Oral History group - to capture on tape both the past as it is remembered by older inhabitants, and the present.
- The Walk-round Guide group - to look at the history of buildings and other places in Wells with the eventual intention of publishing booklets for the interest of both visitors and residents alike.
- Genealogy - to help those interested in tracing their family histories.
| NOTE:- The Group now has the Wells Parish records
from 1550 to 1950 in its possession as well as census records for the period
1841 to 1901. Surnames for baptisms, marriages and burials between 1550 and 1910 are now on computer for rapid scanning. A surname index for all the census is now on computer. These computer records have been uploaded to the internet and are available for download. For access to these files please contact the Webmaster at Wellsonsea@aol.com So that the History Group can keep a record of the use of these files then please include your name, your country/county and the Surname/s being researched, in your Email. Free access is available for "research" purposes, so please state in your email that you are "researching" your family tree. Parish records prior to 1754 are exceedingly diffult to read and take considerable time to decode. Detailed queries can be processed by the Webmaster if you EMail me after looking at the surname indexes on the internet . |
The Webmaster has had access to a number of Trade Directories. 36 Directories for Wells Next The Sea from 1795 to 1937 have been digitised and uploaded to the internet and are available for download. Whites Trade Directory for 1864 has been likewise digitised but this time for surrounding villages of Wells. For access to these files please contact the Webmaster at Wellsonsea@aol.com -
