New President | Farewell to Rev Colin Rudd | AGM | South African Priests | Christian Aid Week
THE next President of Churches Together in and around Faringdon is to be Geoff Smith. He was elected at the recent AGM of Churches Together. A regular member of All Saints' Church, Faringdon, he was very active in the Vale Alive campaign and is a strong supporter of the annual national March for Jesus.
A warm farewell was given at the AGM to the Rev Colin Rudd, Vicar of the parish of Gainfield which comprises Buckland, Littleworth and Pusey, who is retiring in May after 10 years here. He spoke of the inspiration he had derived from the strong ecumenical life of CTIAF, and in particularly from the close links between the Anglicans and Catholics in St Mary's and St George's churches in Buckland.
It was a pleasure for their many friends to have a visit at the AGM from the Rev Len and Barbara Caldecourt, who did so much over many years to sow the seeds of co-operation between the churches in the town. A collection at the AGM service was taken to aid relief work with refugees in Kosovo.
Two South African priests will shortly be staying in the Vale for ten weeks, to learn about and comment on the life of the churches in this rural part of England. The Rev Simon Kokoena and the Rev Joan Hepburn come from different parts of the Diocese of Johannesburg. They will be welcomed at a service at St Mary's, Uffington, on Sunday May 2 at 3pm. A united service, Pentecost Praise, will be held in All Saints' on Whit Sunday, May 23, at the start of their week in Faringdon, and people from all churches in the town are invited to come to meet them then.
The annual Christian Aid Week is May 9-16. We will mark this with a joint service at 6pm on Sunday May 9 at Blessed Hugh RC Church, and there will be house to-house and street collections during the week. Julia Burn , (240670) will be pleased to have offers of collectors. Last year, £2,400 was collected in the area for this relief work.
