Well one night - it must have been around the time Morven and Ruth had the bad fever for I mind Doctor Skelton had been round twice to see them - well, this night there was a terrible loud wind. So loud, I thought the apple tree was going to take off and blow right out of the garden.
Morven had the quilt pulled up around her ears, but something - I don't know what - made her open her eyes. And when she looked, there was the Black Fox in the room looking at her. His fur was black as coal, his eyes glittered like stones and his teeth were sharp as knives.
"Jump on my back Morven and we'll fly across the sky and see what we will see," said the Black Fox.
And though she was shaking with fear, Morven climbed on his back and held tight to his long black fur as they flew up the chimney and out into the night sky. How cold and fine it was out there among the stars and the dark North Sea far below them. And how quickly they flew over mountains and plains, over towns and villages, over lochs and rivers until they came at last to a deep dark forest where everything was still.
"Listen Morven. Listen. And you will hear what is about to happen in the world."
