Give a Hoot
For a Bowl of FruitWhat do apples, oranges and flowers have in common? For one thing, they can't move. When an artist draws or paints a picture of something that can't move, or isn't alive, it's called a "Still Life".
This vase full of flowers was painted about 100 years ago by an artist who is famous for his pictures of sunflowers. His name is Vincent van Gogh. Vincent painted many Still Lifes of these big yellow flowers. He loved yellow! The painting you see here is called "The Vase with 12 Sunflowers". Can you find the artist's signature? Van Gogh liked to sign his paintings with his first name - Vincent.
While Van Gogh was busy working on sunflowers, another famous artist was busy painting pictures of brightly colored fruit. This artist also lived in France. His name is Paul Cezanne. The painting you see here is called "Still Life with Apples". It looks like a lemon slipped in too.
There are many types of Still Life paintings. Some look so real that you want to pick up a piece of fruit and bite into it. Other Still Lifes are less realistic. No matter which style you choose, they are fun to paint. Especially on a rainy day, when you're stuck inside. Roll out the apples and give it a try!
